The value of the neck tie in corporate business?

A businesswoman in the office asked me why I never wear a tie to work. She sometimes does and said for corporate business persons the neck tie is an under valued item of clothing. It adds professionalism and enhances image.

In practical symbolic terms (man, that's a weird way to open a sentence), it's a representation of servitude (as a leash) and disposability (as a noose). In more abstract terms, it's a more general indicator of ablated individuality; being less of a person and more of a faceless cog.

Some people confuse that with professionalism, but that's not what that word is supposed to mean.
