Is It Too Much To Ask : A Happy, Passionate Job?

so i have been arguing back and forth with mom about me seeking job... and the ones she looks for pay fairly well but don't polish any of my skills or reflect any of my talents, they just want a person who can operate a computer and keep files and speak in English — which even an AI robot can do... while my dream job is where i get to make art, or edit novels, or be at HR, or even a librarian's job is more desirable than that of a bank's! because i do wanna earn a lot, but i wanna be happy and satisfied with my work life! is that too impractical?

Doing a job I don't like is similar to being in a loveless marriage for me. It won't last, and it's depressing as fuck. Please bear that in mind before giving a long a$$ "practical life" speech.

It is not too much to ask, no. That's a tough spot to be in.

Follow your dream and do what you love. I've chased a paycheck and it sucks. It becomes a self-licking ice cream cone as one of my better bosses once said. I'd find the job/s you love and do those.

I wonder here: is this possibly a case of your mom's bark being worse than her bite? Like, if you got the editing job or the librarian job would she just bitch at you and leave it at that or would there be worse consequences?

To your point, though, you're right: a job you don't like is depressing af and that has a cascading effect through your life. Keep pursuing the one you really love.

While it is important and aspirational to have a dream job, you still have to pay the bills / support yourself.

Sometimes the dream jobs won’t pay the bills and sometimes it takes time and experience to get the opportunity to obtain your dream job.

I have obtained what most in my field would consider a dream job. It took me over 20years of experience to be qualified to do it / be considered/respected to do the job appropriately.

One final thought, life is all about choices and life balance. Each choice (financial, socially, travel, proposed retirement age, etc) has an effect on either work or personal life. You have to take the path that helps to fulfill your goals.

One final thought, be practical and patient. The path to get where you ultimately end up is an important part of the journey…. enjoy it (it’s not always easy).

It's not too much to ask, but you have to learn how to balance the practical with your passion. I found that balance through investing in the stock market. If you get good at investing or passively generating income, you can have a lower set salary with your creative work and build up your money with more freedom than you would ever have through a cushiony job. But, it is definitely more risky.

I know what you are saying. I got into IT, not because I was really passionate about it but because I had a wife and 3 kids to support and needed a job that would pay the bills and maybe I would not hate it too much.

You are young and do not have all the responsibilities that I had so maybe you could figure out how to do your dream job. It probably will not be easy because fun jobs are really in demand and most of the time some politician's kid ends up with it.

It's a delicate balancing act of being happy and getting paid a decent salary. I've just started a few months ago as a consultant and the happiness to experience ratio can get a bit much sometimes. Having a job is better than not having one though so just doing it until you find the dream job is the way to go

It's ok to Chace after your dreams but if you're not working something is better then nothing. Take a job that pays well but keep looking for one that you will love to do. I'm going through the same thing with my son. He wants a particular job that doesn't have any openings now. I told him to take any job now so he can pay his bills but keep looking for his ideal job

You could do a boring job for a couple of years just to make money, and then switch to something you like better. Invest that money and it will grow to provide you a nice return in retirement.

Be sure to get some kind of experience. Once you get that na, your education is just one line on your resume. I know it because many of my relatives are extremely high-level engineers. And when I look at their resume, I just see 3 to 4 words regarding their education.
Everything else is just experience.

Go for the banking job, work very seriously on your craft. Go on reddit and post in forums like hire a writer, look for side gigs as a proof reader, fund your art work.
A bank will promote you regularly and pay you enough to be OK. Especially if you go to college and get an engineering degree.

Take care of your needs, if you want to make it as an artist, you need to use all the time available to you in the day.

I don't like banks tho. And i don't have skills for bank either, it's something they'd train me at. So I'd be working hard for something I hate.

I'm not saying do something you hate, but I am saying that you're going to have to do something you don't like to get by until you figure your other shit out. Most people like you work in a restaurant from 11 am till 3 am and manage to scrape together a $900/ week

Or you could give the bank a shot, you learn a new skill, have a job that impresses people in case you want to try something else, and you're out by 5, in time to collaborate and work with other like minded people, go out, network.

Being an artist is one of the hardest professions in the world to get started in, I am not kidding. It's up there with being a scientist.

It requires sacrifice, determination, lazer focus and thick skin. And you have to attack it relentlessly. Especially if you're still trying to figure out where you fit in.
