Learning Russian? A bad idea in this day and age?

I've always wanted to learn Russian because I think it's a beautiful language and also widely spread and me being from Czech Republic could make it slightly easier and not so foreign (Czech language is also one of the Slav languages).

I know I may worry for nothing but current events, such as the conflict of Ukraine VS Russia, make me uncertain a little about me going for this... even my parents call me silly for wanting to learn Russian in this age.

Do you think it's a bad idea?
Do I have a chance of learning at least basics and cyrillic alphabet on my own?

I've tried to learn Russian years back when I was still at school but I gave it up in the end. I still own a textbook and workbook, I think I do at least lol

I think it's an excellent idea. Learning Russian can open many professional and academic doors for you. I agree that it is a beautiful language (I would say that it is my favorite language in terms of its tonality), I also hope to study it one day, although I don't know if I will do it since it is a complex language for someone who is a native speaker of Spanish.

It doesn't hurt to know a second language especially if you're concerned that that country is going to be over running your country. US government loves to have people that speaks Russian. You can be an interpreter you can also work as a liaison. There are times businesses need people to speak and understand companies Branch off into Russia.

When you speak a Slavic language it's easy to learn another one. On the other hand in business there is no demand for people who speak Russian. Mandarin or Korean are surely better option to invest time in.

If you live in that part of the world, it makes sense. But if not, it seems like a waste to learn it.

Why not learn a language more widely spoken around the world in case you travel? Russian and its variations are not spoken much around the world except in Russia and a few Slavic pockets. It's not a bad sounding language to my ear, and certainly nicer than German!

I'm Russian. The whole Russia - Ukraine stuff should have zero influence on your decision. Think about where you live (or want to live), what career you want, and whether there may be a demand for people who speak Russian. Could be worth it.

Always good to learn a new language, if you think you can do it. The war with Russia won't last for long and at some point things will get back to normal, and you coud use it someday.

The war in Ukraine won't last forever, won't be the last one and is not the first one either started by Russia. It's not a bad idea.

Who knows. If things don't go worse, then it probably won't be but with Ukrainians living here as well (they understand Russian almost completely), knowing Russian could be helpful.
And if I'm going to let my negative thoughts slide in, if war happens and Russian soldiers or whatever is going to be here, I think it's better to know something than nothing XD

If that's your thing, then go for it. I know basic Russian (I was forced to know the basics when I was younger) but I have no use case for it and I don't plan to learn nor teach it even for the money.
