Did someone in authority suggest you apply for a promoted position?
I told my manager about my expression of interest and this manager has left, so I then let the other manager know about my expression of interest too and she said that she will organise a one-on-one meeting with me.
She said that I will most likely be managing another site due to me relationship with my coworkers and suggested moving to a supervisor before becoming a manager and I told her that I agreed because I don’t want to be overwhelmed by making such a big jump so quickly.
She also said that she will be looking for my replacement, but never really mentioned a specific time for when she will be doing all of this.
She then spoke to me over the phone for about an hour about her personal life as well as how she became a manager. She climbed the ladder the exact same way that I will be doing, hopefully.
It seems they want you to fill the new position.
Interesting. What makes you so sure of that? The manager did tell me to be patient when I wasn’t rushing her, so I said “No worries at all. No pressure. I’ll do whatever it takes to get there. My plan is to move to supervisor before becoming a manager, so that I don’t become too overwhelmed with such a drastic change.”
Also, I let this manager know that I told my coworkers about me going for the position; thinking that I would get their support but instead, I got the complete opposite reaction. She said that they seem jealous and threatened, but I told my coworkers that even though I’m considering this role, I would never see them as “greater than” me, but as my equals. I told the manager about that because I didn’t feel safe coming to work, especially after being bossed around and getting told what to do by my coworkers. I told the manager all of what I typed here.
This must be an office of women. Fuck them, keep moving forward and advance your career if that is what you want.
If you’re talking about my coworkers that have been giving me crap; one is a guy and one is a girl. The guy has been treating me worse than the girl, to be honest.
What do you think about my manager?
Well screw them. What industry is this?
It is always better to wait until you have the position before you talk with coworkers. But, that is past. The manager might be constrained by HR or by a more senior manager budgeting for the position. It is reasonable to ask for a timeline. I would suggest keeping a low profile until things are more certain.
Exactly. I did ask for a timeline because it’s more realistic, rather than such a huge leap to a manager’s position.
It’s a cleaning company. So, my plan is to go from cleaner, to supervisor and then eventually a manager.
Managing people is tough. People have all kinds of bullshit reasons not to show up, or not do their work, or quit without notice, etc. If you get to the point where you are managing managers things will smooth out a bit.
Managers will be managing me as a manager, I’m pretty sure. 🤔
But yeah, I have been able to tackle more tasks and have been wanting more responsibility, as contributing to the company has made me feel accomplished and good about myself. Helping others makes me feel good and happy, overall.
F. Y. I, I am also a physics major, hence a natural problem solver. Solving problems also makes me feel good.
Well, it seems you are doing well. I have to think a physics major will grow bored in this field however.
I want to try and balance both. 🙂
