I'm an author and I just don't get the same sense of purpose and meaning and importance that I had when I was in school. I think it's because my job is very isolating and I don't socialize at all while at work. I wanted to return to university for the social and emotional experience and not even to get a financial upgrade in life.
Some people would love the isolation (myself included). I believe my life has way too much meaning and purpose. Sometimes I want a break from that. I wish I had the talent you have to be an author. You would find me in a cabin deep in the woods writing books. You see Jennifer, we always want what we don't have, makes sense why would we want what we already have? The lives we had in school are in the past now, can't go back we can only go forward. As for the social aspect do you have to isolate to write? Can't you go to coffee houses or libraries and sit there and write. You might meet some new people that way. You can watch people interacting with others and maybe even get new ideas for books. Out of curiosity, what type of books do you write?

Seems like a lot of people better academics has a tendency to isolate themselves from corporate world. You would totally be surprised if you open yourself up to your coworkers. Spend some time with him in the lunchroom. Get involved with company clubs, bowling leagues, toastmasters it depends on the company and the size also. I joined toastmasters was quite fun and hilarious I got to know my colleagues a lot better. Don't be a wallflower at your desk. If you work in a cube farm talk with the person across from you.
An office job for meaning and purpose? You're trapped in a cubicle all day to make someone else rich. Start your own business of something that's important to you (that people will pay for, otherwise you won't have a business).
But doesn't it give your life meaning to know thousands are reading your books?

The vast majority of people do not find meaning in life because of their jobs. Not many people look back on their life and say “You know, I wish I could have been in a corporate office environment working for the man longer than I did.” Why do our elites push this idea that we must be highly extraverted and climb a corporate ladder to have fulfillment? Because it assists in concentrating wealth into the hands of the elites.
The meaning of life is to grow. Whatever way you want to grow.
Work can be good for socializing. Is one of the reasons I didn't like work-from-home.
That is why in all we do we should do for God
