The original version of standard toggle light switches from the early and mid 20th century never had "on" and "off" printed on them because they contained elemental mercury (a liquid metal from −38.83°C or −37.89°F to 356.62°C or 673.91°F). Thus is didn't matter which way those switches were installed, because "up" was always going to be "on" at room temperature. Gravity dictates the internal mercury would always be in the bottom part of the inside of the switch, thus always internally making contact with the back end of toggle when the outside of the toggle was flipped up. That's why the "toggle up" position on modern toggle switches became the industry standard for "on". This is not to be confused with modern "three-way" switches, which also don't have "on" and "off" printed on them, but contain no mercury. Three-way switches are meant to be used in pairs. They are designed to control a light or device, or a series of lights or devices, from two separate locations. Usually utilized in long corridors and hallways, and in large rooms with two entrances. Since three-way switches work in tandem, on and off can be up or down at either switch. So nothing is printed on the toggles of three-way switches.

No. I avoid learning useless shit. That's why I hated school. They make you memorize EVERYTHING. I can understand going over a broad array of materials... but making you memorize bullshit you naturally want to forget is the OPPOSITE of education. Education should sharpen your mind. Not clog it with bullshit.
