Have you ever heard of anyone being made "manager " of a restaurant who started out as a server?

somehow this girl was made " manager " of our local pub a year or two ago , at the time was because long time manager was pregnant and decided to leave cause of covid. and so they and to give job to someone and somehow i really have no clue how they gave it to her.

as far as i know her only work experience there was that she had been a server/bartender for a couple summers before that happened. but she had no role in running the business until that point. but i can't find her resume online so not sure what her exact experience is

but the place has gone way downhill since she took over , it always had live music every weekend but not rarely does , its not busy on Friday anymore when it used to always be packed , she tried to do these weird theme nights which were not popular at all and no on dressed up for, she almost got charged for overcrowding on the may longwkend as place overflowed and no bouncer to stop people from going in until it was too late , young people under 25 don't seem to want to go there much anymore used to always be busy on holidays when they were back home but not many come out now ,

but i've never heard of an average server ever being made manager of a major restaurant bar before ever? it just seems so crazy to do this , what was the owner thinking if at all

i found her page in linkedin , left me even more confused as to why she became manager of our pub , she doesn't have any past experience in bars/restaurants and never ran a business. did get a diploma from a community college for advertising/marketing and worked 2 short jobs related to that. but that isn't really related to running a busy bar/pub which would of been more business management programs at college

Happens all the time. I’m a server myself, and honestly would never even push getting into a managing position. It’s very very very overrated and in the end depending on where you work, you can end up making less than what your servers that you are babysitting everyday make. It’s added responsibility and most people that end up on managing positions I consider to be suckers unless if they are in a general manager position that has decent pay and guaranteed secured spot

but she isn't just a low level manage , mean she is the " manager " of the pub , highest position before the actual owner. so she is essentially running the place as he is never there ever. i'm not sure why she wanted to be the manager , it sounds like she just wanted the $ money to pay for her new house and doesn't care about the people who actually go to the pub

It’s a shit position anyways. Think about it, she’s basically a restaurant owner (because the owner doesn’t want to do it) but still receives less pay than what an actual business owner makes. I guarantee you she isn’t making much more than the servers.

true but the servers there make a lot of money during the summer when its busy , its a waterfront restaurant in a tourist area and busy all day , even if she's just making what they make it still be a lot during the summer months. the restaurant is still busy its the bar nights which have gone south lately. i'm not sure what the actual owner does as he's never there and when i have seen him there he is drinking beer at the bar or with friends. i've never seen him do actual work or anything related to the bar

The owner is smart. He is making money without doing any work. Any person that ends up in a managing position is not smart

he must of done work originally to get this restaurant to where it is now but doesn't seem to interested in doing much now to keep it going into the future. true she is not smart at all , she seems in over her head and doesn't want to admit it , her ideas are all failures , often massively and she doesn't seem to get it , she though the place was going to be busy the same night a massive concert was occuring nearby and had 10 servers working that night when it was empty like literally empty and didn't even bother to send them home until way into the night

That’s the point of a business lol it’s to build it up so afterwards you just make bank , and welcome to the restaurant industry where you are smarter than your managers lol

he needs to realise its all going to fall apart him her running the place , she can't seem to do anything right and doesn't even understand how social media works for bars , she posts a lot of stories on instagram but never actual posts , thing is only people already following the bar will see the stories if they bother to click on them , the posts could be seen to non followers if there tagged as being from our city and seen elsewhere on instagram and those are the people you want to see it most , the poeple not familiar with the pub , she also never posts pictures of people there having a good time with friends only food on fancy display plates on the waterfront

i've been to a lot of bars and restaurants and can't recall anything similar , apparently she did go to high school here but might of moved away for a while and back to work there. a lot of the servers only work there for the summer then go back to school or other jobs which is why it seems so odd to make a server the manager when she really hadn't run a business before
