hint it ain't going well , this happened at my local pub. during covid for whatever reasons the longtime manager decided to leave and a new manager was hired. thing it this person wasn't really a skilled manager , just a server who worked there in the past.
and now things have gone totally downhill , after a couple years of seemingly managing to hold one its just gone to pot. like seriously i was there a week ago for a game 7 nhl playoff game and she turned this afwul playlist of techno music on full blast and no sound at all for the hockey game. like who wants to watch a game 7 with no sound and techno music on.
and she'll send other staff home early when its not busy so she gets all the tips and makes more money herself.
she oddly managed to get a diploma in college for advertising so you think she's at least do a great job on the social media , wrong its like the worst part. all she does is post food posts , never any pictures of actual staff or customers at the bar having fun. and the facebook page seems to be entirely dormant its not even used anymore only instagram
and whats bizarre is owner won't even get rid of her and admit its not working out , like i've been there on Friday / Saturday nights lately and its not even busy at all , its been like half empty. like total disaster what was he thinking on this one

Pubs are going to the wall at an alarming rate, at least here in the UK they are. It sounds like there was no thinking involved in giving her the job, and even less in not making sure there was a probation period..
On a side note. ALL pubs turn the sound down for major sporting events here too, only they don't play crummy music over the top. That just seems spiteful!
i know its all so crazy , who though she'd do a good job and once it was clear she wasn't why won't he end the disaster and bring someone else in.
no clue why she would of turned the music up that loud during the NHL game , true a lot of women don't like sports but this is a business and people paying a lot of money to go there that night and watch the game.
You know what I'd do in future? Either find a different pub to watch it, OR invite your friends round to watch the game and THEN go out to eat afterwards.
Never mind, scratch that 2nd idea. I just found out how long an NHL match can take!

its like the smallest bar possible , place is literally empty and not any customers at all , and is nhl games on tv rate now but ain't nobody there watching them , wonder why?
The owners can't blame anyone but themselves for hiring her, but it might be worth drawing their attention to this. I mean, if their establishment is suffering the way so many others are, they might be pleased of the feedback!
but the place is empty on a Sunday night , seen it not busy on fridays and saturdays too. its like owner doesn't even care , he's wasting money trying to keep his dream of owner a bar alive , not paying attention to reasons why its not working out anymore
I didn't think there was anyone left who Gordon Ramsey hadn't kicked the **** out of yet in the food/ drink business, metaphorically speaking of course.
should at least be a red flag for owner that place is empty like literally empty on a Sunday night , especially when my area gets much busier this time of year , were entering the busy season and bars/restaurants should be getting a lot busier
is no customers at all , have to really wonder why , true it was mothers day maybe it was busier earlier with people taking mom out for lunch or dinner but still empty? entirely empty at 8 30 for a pub?
The guy clearly has no clue how to run a business! That place sounds like it could be a gold mine if he put the effort in!
it has been really busy in the past , its definitely gone downhill since she was manager , it can still be really busy during the summer on a warm sunny day patio can be packed
but still been so many empty days and times lately , even if they have a good summer its not a profitable year round business anymore
Have you considered the possibility of something going on with the owner and her?
that angle doesn't seem possible cause she is a married ( lesbian ) , if she was involved sexually with the owner it would make sense why he was keeping her around but isn't any way she could be based on what i know
according to google live its still not busy , its like only a "pencil amount of red" like basically a tiny line on bottom on bar so like empty and it say its open till 12pm like what is staff doing for this long in an empty pub
maybe he's worried she'll file a complaint that he fired her cause she is lesbian even though it was cause she sucked at her job and place not even busy enough to maintain the business , possible but highly unlikely she'd ever do anything sexual with him
She could bat for both sides? Either way, something smells fishy about that setup to me.
i know something isn't right here , is other angles too. owner only wants to hire female servers especially white , younger attractive ones. but is laws here that say you cannot discriminate job applicants based on there age or race , yet he seems to do it all the time
so perhaps the manager knows too much or has some dirt on him , i really don't know he must be aware the place isn't busy many nights and customers like myself not happy with situation.
but i'm not entirely sure what is going on , i've looked at this from different angles and perspective but it makes little sense to keep her on if its not working out but he's keeping her on so has to be a reason
There are restaurants here in London that are fronts for drugs, prostitution, human trafficking etc. It wouldn't matter HOW busy they looked because of all the other trade they do.. I bet you hadn't considered that being a possibility?
anything is possible but were a rather small city only 20,000 so that kind of crime isn't especially common here. some of the people who work there do smoke marijuana but its legal here you can buy it at licensed shops so i don't see what the point of selling it there would be.
i do suspect the owner has issues , perhaps with women in general , some sort of womanizer who wants really hot younger women he can't have cause he's like 60 . so he hires them all as servers for the summer and enjoys there presence at the pub. but they don't seem to be into the place much anymore and don't even come out much when off work like they used to.
pretty rough weekend for there bar nights though , slow Friday , Saturday and entirely dead Sunday , but next weekend long weekend so will see if things pick up , that weekend is ususally exceptionally busy here and a big party weekend
update i went there again today around 3 pm , was kind of busy as weather nice and some people on patio but server said it had been a really slow day. then i left after 1 beer
things very weird , seems to be a lot of servers missing who used to work there and very short staffed yet owner refuses to post help wanted ads looking for new staff , which is bizarre on any level , why would an owner do that when he needs staff for business to stay open and succeed.

i'm seriously weirded out by the server situation like i knew some of them really well , so for them to just not be around at all is off and i really want to say something about this
Be my guest. That establishment and staff clearly has a place in your heart, and to see it being run down into the ground like this is upsetting for you. I get it!
yeah situation is very frustrating , i hope to know more by the long weekend as to who still works here or not as there will be more servers working then and better idea who is still missing from line up.
i get that staff come and go at times but seems to have been a mass exodus from here at end of last summer into winter and its only starting to show now that its summer and those staff aren't around anymore
maybe not a surprise its dead on a Monday but owner is paying to keep the lights on some nights with no sign of much activity here
Do you have any other connection to the place, other than it being your local and you are on terms with some of the staff, who may or may not still work there?
i've never worked there , its just always been the place people went to downtown to hang out at. is people who i've talked to at other spots who worked there before.
some of the ones who are missing i'd only really talk to them there but i do see people from this spot at other places obviously , being a smaller city i would run into them at other spots some not related to bars like the gym
i feel after this weekend will get more answers as to whats going on there and who is still there or not
I got ya.. So it's more like a community spirit that is being eroded by the owner's inability to run the place properly
it was always the local hangout , he act's like its his personal hang out for his drinking buddies but by law its a public space
and he is breaking the law by not following fair and legal hiring practices , i get that some places prefer to hire attractive women as servers but he is taking things to the extreme by not allowing anyone who doesn't fit his ideal server category to work there no wonder he is short staffed
i'm relatively certain the owner is engaging in illegal and discriminatory hiring practices , i get that he likes hot white women but its really going too far and its 2024 , time to end the insanity and enter the real world

is only female servers there , hasn't been any men in years so is pretty obvious he only hires women , and only attractive young women.
they also posted that odd help wanted add a few months back , it said they were looking for kitchen help and hosts but oddly made no mention of servers. despite the fact they seem to be missing a lot of the servers from last year and seem short staffed so why would they post an add and not allow people to apply to be servers
would seem its cause owner doesn't want to have to accept resumes from men and women he deems too unattractive to work there so he can't post a help wanted ad where anyone can apply and worried someone will complain against him for doing this
but how is he finding his servers then? a mystery and why does he care so much about the attractiveness of his female staff members , why not just hire anyone who can do the job , why is he so worried about there appearance?

these people are like masters of deception , you can be like rate there in front of them in person and they'll be able to hide the truth from you. i don't get the feeling answers are forthcoming either , clearly something very weird going on here with owner and the servers
i've never heard of a restaurant that was short staffed be unwilling and refusing to post a help wanted add looking for new servers , that by itself in insanely weird and bizarre
i checked all the popular job search sites here and no ads from this place looking for staff or servers.
but i've noticed that before that owner does not use job search sites for hiring staff so however he is finding them is not through those options
but makes sense as he only wants to hire hot women so he doesn't want 100's of resumes from average people he deems unattractive
i'm not even sure how they'll have enough staff to make in through busy summer season at this point but seems owner is willing to be short staffed over having to hire someone else
was back in there today , nice day and patio open now but situation with servers is much worse than first though , there really short staffed. a lot of the servers from 2023 seem to have disappeared into thin air and even the people who work there don't seem to know who is back this summer

i honestly wonder a lot what is going on there to be honest , seems to be few answers. all indications are there planning for a normal summer season.
but the staffing server specifically servers is seriously off and crazy , i've seen restaurants here before lose staff and be short staffed. but the owners come up with plans to fill the holes and seek out new staff.
i'm not sure why the owner is not actively trying to hire new servers? if so many of the previous ones aren't there anymore
its possible some of them changed there minds and originally told him they'd be back this summer , so now he's left with vacancies and no plan
i plan to drop by again later today to see who is working and how many servers are present , although its suppose to rain so that might close the outdoor patio and they'd need less servers anyways , so i may not see much new
but very weird that so many of the student servers don't seem to be around anymore cause normally this is a pretty popular and well paying place to work during the summer. the owner could of easily filled this holes if he had posted some help wanted ads , lots of people would of applied

well its pretty much summer here so going to have to be someone working there serving , so going to find out soon who is there or not.
the owner has a great location but is whole concept was really flawed , it make logical sense to sell his great location to someone else and just move on but not sure this guy is willing to do that

had that same though about this owner , like he got lucky years ago when he first opened this place , a great location in a growing community on the water , but doesn't actually know much about the restaurant industry. or knows that what he's doing is wrong and just doesn't care
i'm not sure where this is going honestly , things actually quiet down here after the long weekend so if they get through this , have a couple weeks in early June to figure things out before the actual summer rush starts, but with what i've seen so far not feeling too optimistic they will
i've never seen them this low in staff heading into the summer season , and most servers have already committed to other jobs by now so might not even be that many still looking for work , even if they do end up posting a help wanted ad which they seem unwilling to do

he's not short kitchen help at all , its only the servers where there is an issue , he doesn't want to hire minorities as servers only attractive white women 18-30 , that might help to explain why he's so short staffed , his standards are very high and only the hottest girls make the cut
but for some reason this year he ain't finding many girls want to work there or something , not 1 single new hire , i did some counting of the girls i've seen there so far this year.
at count he has 9 experienced servers heading into the long weekend , plus those 4 hosts being trained into servers and 5 or so hosts but there too young to serve liquor
and over a dozen missing staff from last summer who's whereabouts are unknown or if they even still work there , the math doesn't add up
yesterday they were so desperate they called that one girl who left for a real estate job and tried to get her to come in last night but she said no ( but she is coming in on Saturday ) and looks like this older server who is like late 30's and has a kid came in instead , like thats how desperate things are , there is literally no options
Wait until the current staff get better offers elsewhere.. he'll be on his own before long.

I had another thought. What if he put them on 'only work when I need you' contracts?
well yeah its only busy during the summer , i've suspected there on contract from like May - till end of August or Oct if they were staying for fall. but if there back for summer shouldn't they be back at work now? still no sign of a lot of the people who worked there in 2023
last night not even that busy for a long weekend , no live music or anything going on there , busier than last week when it was like empty. 2 more of the student servers have returned but they barely got by last night. oddly one of the hostess trainees was working bar , crazy to have a trainee working a bar night on a long weekend , they put her in a quiet area away from party crowd and then sent her home early but she actually seems ok with job
even with those 2 students being back there still missing a lot of servers , it seems like there just gone and not there anymore but no one wants to say anything about it , maybe owner or manager told them to stay quiet , but typical at restaurants to not really talk about staff who left publically
It suits the owner to employ the students only when he needs them.. He probably says, if you need the work I have some hours for you, and they either say yay or nay. Of course, he doesn't then have to pay them unless he needs them.
he needs them for the summer for sure , but some of the servers " missing " were year round and there in the fall / winter. i took a break from going there around Jan-april and when i returned a few of them disappeared.
i wonder if the manager didn't give them enough shifts over the winter or it so dead there they didn't make any money so left. but is a couple who just seem to be gone who used to always be there

What with the place we've been talking about and the one which is opening a couple of months later than expected, it does seem extremely laid back there.
it seems to have survived the long weekend somehow , it seems a few girls came in to work the weekend that had other jobs for some extra money. although that won't really work during summer cause it can still be busy on a weekday and so they need full time staff not just a bunch of part times who come in on weekends
and still a lot of missing servers who were no where to be seen this weekend and unclear if they will come back or not
it actually quiets down here a fair bit until actual summer in June now , so they have some time to figure things out but really wonder if they will or not

but this is a real restaurant , has like maybe 100 employees during the summer if you count part time and full time , kitchen etc
shouldn't she have some experience running a business or something , the jobs she had before were at advertising agencies and a real estate office nothing related to running a pub

and the failure rate for this kind of business is astonishing
this was an established restaurant , had been there for a long time before she was hired , used to be very busy and popular years ago. it seems like it already has failed under her leadership , owner just doesn't want to admit it

its not about me being the manager , its simply time for her to move on with her life and admit this isn't working out. i was there last night not even busy on a Saturday and its like nothing they do to try and fix things works its past the point of return
