Is my boss a tyrant? Was I right to quit despite being called disloyal to the company, lazy and negligent?

In my first months at a job, he yelled at me because I worked overtime to make sure all the documents are right before a meeting, he threw some papers angrily on my desk asking "is that all you've done in two hours?" without turning all the pages to see I've done more than he thought, he looked at my assistant and laughed when I asked a question. Or told me to read some documents very carefully without giving me a deadline and told me to extract a certain information from them until the end of a day's schedule. I was unable to finish the whole document, but before I left the office, I sent him an email with the requested info and he thanked me very much. The next day, he asked me if I could give him some info from the documents rightaway. I told him I hadn't finished and he said angrily: "Is this a bad joke? Are you kidding me? You can't spend a whole work day on a single document. It has only 30 pages". I said that it had 40, which is quite different and he burst out laughing. Then I found out the information I requested was in another file, of which he was unaware. I told him and he said: "Right. I forgot to tell you about that. I couldn't find it myself before either". When I was focusing on my tasks, he would get behind me and ask out of nowhere: "What are you working?". He would point his finger at me and fix me with a stare. When I asked "Sorry?", he said: "Nothing. I was just thinking." I understand that he is under a lot of pressure as he runs two businesses and has a family, but I was not the one who made him do that to afford two expensive cars and a huge house. Other people can do away with exploiting others by having less expensive cars and an apartment. When I left, I told him about all this and his excuse was: "I offered you a good salary".
