Why would someone go to college to get a 4 year degree in a low paying field?

In years past, it wasn't as big of a deal because college wasn't nearly as expensive. But in today's world, often graduating students have a lot of debt, so it can be difficult to pay back their student loans if they don't have a well-paying job.

Expectations being different than reality. Despite what you or anyone else may advise the person, if they’re set on pursuing a certain degree, career, etc then nothing you say will change their mind. They already have an idea in their mind about how things can potentially go for them and feel optimistic. In most cases they just have to find out on their own what the outcome will be and fortunately it can work out in their favor but often times it does not.

@hollyk21 My best friend from college was an Art/Graphic Design major. Fortunately his parents paid for most of his college, because he never made the kind of money to pay back large loans. He is doing OK but not the big bucks by any means. So you state it well because he never made what his expectations were.

Maybe they have rich parents? I used to work at a private college and there were a lot of spoiled rich kids majoring in sociology.
