What is the point of goin to college earning a degree if you are just going to be cheap?

My older sister 29 lives in a world of cheapness. If I was her I would be shopping for designer things driving an expensive car. My sister makes good income but I see no point she cheap shops at dollar tree , comparing prices. And she drive an old 2012 car. She lives in a mobile home because she does not want to pay yearly association fees at a nice neighborhood. My sister even wears Dollar tree make up because in her opinion a $20 Sephora make up is to expensive. Girl I work at subway and i still buy my slef Mac cosmetics. My sister should even be on that show extreme cheapskates. She so cheap!

That degree didn't come for free. It's highly likely she's carrying a heavy debt load and HAS to make monthly payments. Most people graduate from college with basically a mortgage payment hanging over their heads that will take them about 20yrs to pay off. That type of debt is something you WILL be required to pay, even you declare bankruptcy.

There are no rules saying because you earn a large income, that you need to spend it all on expensive things. If she's happy with her life, be happy and thankful for her.

Think about this... when it comes time for her to quit working, she's going to be in a great financial situation. Spending it the way you want... she'd be working until she was 92 before she could retire. Living the way she is, means she could probably retire in her early 50's and totally enjoy the rest of her life. She sounds like a very smart lady!

Why blow $75K on a car, when a $30K car will work equally as nice, and get you A-B with just as many bells and whistles?

The way you like to blow $$$, tells me you love to live in debt up to your ears - owing everyone under the sun. Practicality seems to have no meaning to you.

You come across as someone who'd buy a pretty house, where the plumbing and electric don't work well, the furnace only puts out half the heat and the walls have zero insulation. BUT... the place looks pretty on the outside! Worthless to live in.

I'm not trying to sound mean, but sheesh. Give your sister some credit for completing college. Let her find her own way about handling money 💰. Just because you wanna spend every nickel you get, doesn't make her wrong for pinching her pennies.

@Cherry234 - My wife and I earn a very decent living. That didn't come about by accident. She and I worked very hard to get where we are. Nonetheless, we live in a modest home (less than $150K). We do drive fairly new cars (both less than 7yrs old). We only have a single TV in the house (32"). We COULD live a LOT more expensively, but purposely choose not to. Our house is paid off, we own both of our cars. Our furniture is all paid for. We have zero debt (including credit cards). Retirement is about 3yrs away for us. The last thing I want, is to be carrying a ton of debt into retirement!

Just because you earn a good income, doesn't mean you need to blow it all on "stuff". Not sure what the OP truly wants. At some point, you gotta realize how much more "stuff" do you "need"? There's a MAJOR difference between a need and a want. The OP comes across as someone who just "wants" and wants WAY more than the need.

Goforit1010 thanks God in my part of Europe University is either very cheap or free.
As for Asker, I have to also tell you the degree actually isn't about chasing shallow prestige, but making an intellectual person out of you, to be able to see above the superficial things, and to be able to think for yourself. Your sister does think for herself. And whom are you trying to impress. Realistically, no one knows which eye shadow you're wearing, MAC or something from dollar store - unless you tell them. And why would they judge you upon that? If that is their criteria, those are some Very shallow friends who would never be there in need for you, for all they would care is outward glitter and not inner emotions.

I think you think spending money on oneself expensive way is showing self-love. But in reality, it's opposite. If you take charge of your life and finances, self love is investing in your future and it's financial stability with saving and investing. So your sister really doesn't hate herself. It would be horrible to live life in constant flips of feast-and-famine.

All she cares about is spending money on superficial things and honestly I don't want to be friends with people who care about that stuff. I like some expensive things like iPhones and Mac laptops but Idc about having a luxurious car or home. If people care about what type of car you drive or how big your house is then they're not worth it. Stay away from people who are going to be a bad influence on you and encourage you or even demand you to spend money on superficial things. You don't need them in your life. @Asker - People my age have PhD's? A good many do not. Several of our friends have Bachelors and Masters degrees, but not all of them. My wife just got her Masters degree 3yrs ago. As for me? The only degree I have is 98.6o. I have no college degree. My wife and I earn roughly the same amount of $$. I think it was just last year her income was more than mine.

What these other ladies have told you, is true. No one cares about the make-up you use. They can't tell anyway. As for the type of car you drive, if that's important to someone else, they're pretty shallow. The same for your house. It's not how much stuff you accumulate that's important. It's what's inside YOU that shows through.

My dad makes over $130,000 a year and when we vacationed in Las Vegas we walked 32 miles cause we were too cheap to buy a $20.00 CAB back to our hotel and our dinner was $2.00 tacos from a restaurant designed for illegal Mexican immigrant employees and we walked 2.5 hours to get there for the meal. Being rich does not mean you waste money, I used to cut up all my plastic so I could save space in my garbage bags and use them 1-2 days more before throwing out the trash.

Does she have student loans? A lot of people who come out of college are saddled with debt. Perhaps she's prioritizing paying off her loans. Some people will make sacrifices and go to extreme measures just to pay off their loans. No one likes being in debt and some people are more averse to risk than others
