Here are some possibilities:

- He could have just been being friendly and giving a little smile to acknowledge making eye contact. Guys sometimes do that subconsciously as a polite greeting.

- Maybe he thought you were cute and was just giving a little friendly acknowledgment smile to see if you noticed him. But since you were with your boyfriend, he probably didn't mean anything too flirty by it.

- It's possible he was curious about the new people at the table and smiling was a non-threatening way to check you out from afar without being too obvious about it. But again, likely nothing inappropriate meant by a quick smile.

- He may have recognized you from somewhere else like around campus or the neighborhood and was smiling to see a familiar face in the crowd.

I wouldn't read too much into a brief half smile. Chances are the dude was just being casually friendly without any hidden agenda. But if he tries to catch your eye a lot or looks like he's staring, you might want to ignore him in case he gets the wrong idea. Otherwise I wouldn't stress - people smile at each other all the time without it meaning anything deep.
