I think one reason many people do not pick up new languages is they do not want to return back to the womb and experience language the way they once did as toddlers. As a child, many things are unknown and you are forced to learn even if you don't want to because your survival depends on it. An adult can say, I don't feel like reading this foreign book today, so I will eat ice cream and read and speak in my native tongue instead. Many people slack off when the work is optional rather than mandatory. Once you know one language, all other languages become optional and some don't have the desire to try it.
Well, I don't know about Spanish specifically, but Dr. Seuss certainly helped me to learn to read. It stands to reason it could help you, given that you already know the book in English.
