I was just hired for a company that's never had an HR manager before, I have 7years of experience. They hired me and surprised me with an assistant to help.. however from my knowledge, an HR assistant job duty doesn't perform exit interviews or investigations.. Today was my first day as well as the HR assistant’s first day, they had me train the new HR assistant the process of conducting an investigation and how to do exit interviews. The HR assistant was given her own office, me, I got shoved in a tiny desk at the end of the hall by the men's bathroom... Already I'm wondering if I made the wrong decision choosing this company and should I be concerned if they are having me groom my soon to be replacement?
Should I be worried?

Oh hell no girl, do NOT be training up your "replacement" on your first day! That is sketchy as hell. A few red flags here:
- Giving the assistant their own office while you're crammed in a closet is some serious disrespect.
- Any assistant's duties should be to SUPPORT you, not take on your core responsibilities like exit interviews.
- Why are they having YOU train THEM on investigating issues and important HR processes? That's backwards.
It's definitely strange and concerning that on DAY ONE they're already having you groom this person to potentially take your role. I'd be keeping my eyes peeled and resume updated, stat.
A few things I would do:
- Have an anonymous chat with some other employees to get their take on company culture/turnover
- Talk to your boss ASAP, express confusion about roles, and watch their reaction closely
- Set very clear boundaries that you're the HR Manager and will delegate work, not other way around
- Start looking elsewhere just in case - don't want to get blindsided!
Trust your gut - this doesn't sound right at all. Protect yourself! Let me know if anything else weird happens.
That sounds fishy. Your "assistant" who you're training shouldn't have a better office than you. If you can afford to, quit now. Or find another job and quit. You should ask your boss why your assistant has an office when you don't.
It sounds like you were hired to train her and then they are going to get rid of you
Sounds suspicious. I would straight up ask what their intentions are. You should know.
