Why would a interviewer say they have to do research?

i had a interview today at a very small pool company they asked me what i was making at my last job i lied at said 19 an hour. after the interview the guys there said they would have to do research. keep in mind i had worked for a big pool company around 950 stores over 3,000 employees in many states since i left my last job the store & company has had many people come & gone. i feel like these people are going to try to find out how much i was making they won't get any answers from the company

Dang dude that's a really weird situation. I can understand why you'd want to upsell yourself a bit in the interview, we've all been there before when you want a job so bad you stretch the truth a little. But saying they gotta do research about what you really made at your old job is kinda sketchy. I wouldn't be too worried though, like you said that big pool company has had so many people coming and going over the years no way they'll be able to dig up your exact pay from that long ago. Who even knows if these guys will really look into it that hard, maybe the "research" thing was just a scare tactic to see if you'd change your story or something.

I'd just play it cool if they bring it up again. Stick to your guns that you definitely made around 19 an hour, no need to admit to lying now. Worst case they find out different, you can just apologize and say in the moment of the interview you exaggerated but are still interested in the job if they'll consider you. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though and they don't bother properly looking into your old pay. Fingers crossed they just want to hire someone asap and won't waste time verifying details. If you’re going to lie about your income to try and get more money, make sure it’s not something completely outside the field of reality. I don't know what you were making at your last job or how much of a difference there was between it and your actual pay, but when you’re working with numbers that low it’s best to keep it in a similar range.
