Do YOU think its a good idea to require people to be 18 or over to be able to go into a library by yourself?

Yup this is a real sign in a public Idaho library. If you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and every time they do they must sign an affidavit.

Approve or disapprove?

Wtf? I live in one of the most anal states in the country and we never had such ridiculous laws. I went to the library unaccompanied all the time as a kid. Sometimes to do research for school assignments and sometimes just to research world history because I was interested in it (I was a nerd in school, don’t judge me). Unless the library has nothing but porn material (which I doubt), I don’t get it.

The UK is moving away from dealing with the USA as a whole and moving to dealing with you on a state by state basis. It's largely driven by the fact you come up with bat shit crazy ideas for laws. Is there some kind of competition on to see who can come up with the wackiest law? "Hey florida demands bible verses in Chinese cookies what can we do?"

Is this because the library has what could be considered pornographic or otherwise explicit material just mixed in with everything else? That's about the only reasonable explanation I can think of (which could also be easily mitigated by simply separating those books into a different section or not having them in a public library in the first place).

Wouldn't this mean children wouldn't be allowed in their own school's library too, without supervision? It all feels absolutely ridiculous. But from what I heard this has become a growing trend over whiney parents complaining about books they would never bother to read anyway

Children are allowed to access knowledge.
I was taught by my teachers HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Checking multiple sources, looking at people who have experience firsthand (both negative & positive), and diving into why people feel / think the way they do on a given subject to reach the most ‘center’ conclusion while leaving bias such as religion also old ideas / tradition behind to be able to be open minded.

I would say it depends. If we're talking about a 15 year old, then I think they should be able to go there by themselves. But obviously if it's an 8 year old then it's obvious that they can't go by themselves.

I don't understand the under 30 logic...

Everyone should have access to knowledge, regardless of their age.

I disapprove this is to stop young kids from stealing books, just to think they want to say young people are thieves is bull. They can't be accused of something they didn't do, they need to get rid of the elderly running the libraries now not all elderly but some start this crap.

Strongly disapprove, kids need access to knowledge and internet. Internet and computers not a big deal now since they are everywhere but in the late 90s, early 00s they were a big deal and, local libraries were the only access for computers and internet outside of school for many kids.
