Yup this is a real sign in a public Idaho library. If you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and every time they do they must sign an affidavit.
Approve or disapprove?
I'll leave this here while you contemplate this

Wtf? I live in one of the most anal states in the country and we never had such ridiculous laws. I went to the library unaccompanied all the time as a kid. Sometimes to do research for school assignments and sometimes just to research world history because I was interested in it (I was a nerd in school, don’t judge me). Unless the library has nothing but porn material (which I doubt), I don’t get it.
The UK is moving away from dealing with the USA as a whole and moving to dealing with you on a state by state basis. It's largely driven by the fact you come up with bat shit crazy ideas for laws. Is there some kind of competition on to see who can come up with the wackiest law? "Hey florida demands bible verses in Chinese cookies what can we do?"
"I know let's ban kids from libraries "
Is this because the library has what could be considered pornographic or otherwise explicit material just mixed in with everything else? That's about the only reasonable explanation I can think of (which could also be easily mitigated by simply separating those books into a different section or not having them in a public library in the first place).
I highly doubt they really went through and combed through the library to make that call. And even if so why not simply remove those books entirely instead of doing this?
I cannot see this any other way than just flat out censorship.
I don't know about public libraries. Except they’re a haven for poor people to use the internet, read or even rent movies.

Wouldn't this mean children wouldn't be allowed in their own school's library too, without supervision? It all feels absolutely ridiculous. But from what I heard this has become a growing trend over whiney parents complaining about books they would never bother to read anyway
Im thinking yeah.
Children are allowed to access knowledge.
I was taught by my teachers HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Checking multiple sources, looking at people who have experience firsthand (both negative & positive), and diving into why people feel / think the way they do on a given subject to reach the most ‘center’ conclusion while leaving bias such as religion also old ideas / tradition behind to be able to be open minded.
I would say it depends. If we're talking about a 15 year old, then I think they should be able to go there by themselves. But obviously if it's an 8 year old then it's obvious that they can't go by themselves.
I don't understand the under 30 logic...
Everyone should have access to knowledge, regardless of their age.
That’s crazy, it’s pretty much any age. i would put a link in but GaG does not like libraries it seems
What’s next burning books?
oh thats already been happening lol. yeah...
Kinda stupid really. What are kids gonna do? Steal books? Cause I’ve seen more adults do that than children.
They're afraid they might be exposed to things that they already see on the internet lol
David’s wee bit pin from a history book 🙄
Strongly disapprove, kids need access to knowledge and internet. Internet and computers not a big deal now since they are everywhere but in the late 90s, early 00s they were a big deal and, local libraries were the only access for computers and internet outside of school for many kids.
It's not like the library is an adult space, so not sure why over 18 is even needed.
it's full censorship through and through.
Plus +13 yr. olds could probably be ok in the library by themselves & behave.
Well. When there is pornographic content in libraries ir has to be done.
I doubt they looked through every single book in this library to make that call.
Is it cause they’ve got books children can’t read?
most likely no.
More likely is it contains books THEY think kids shouldn't read regardless of what the vast majority of people think. Most are not in favor of censoring things unless its very very obvious its pornographic or something.
Ah ok I see
that would be immediately detrimental to those who use the free space such as libraries to escape for instance abusive households.
NO! That is absolutely ridiculous!
Laura 🤗 🥰
I didn't know books were only for over 18's. I stepped into a library for the first time when I was only 7.
How DARE my tax dollars be spent to PREVENT community access to taxpayer funded resources. Fuck that! Its offensive and retrograde.
Has anyone told the lawmakers that top shelves exist?
Also the same kids have access to internet.
Is this about book censorship?
most likely. i mean it's idaho lol
Sad sad if it is.
School Age and Up!! xxoo
no thats just dumb
Strongly disapprove. That’s crazy!
I think it's ridiculous.
