My boss is great, is really good at asking my career goals, providing training and giving pay rises. BUT although there is always talk about developing my role (they always mention a Director level possition) nothing ever really happens, i just get more work (more projects to be fair) I dont think he's lying to me but im starting to think this Director position is just so far in the future and im just going to get more work. How long should i stick it out? Its just always a bit out of reach and the company needs to grow more.

It's hard to say. Your boss might have good intentions. But they could also be stringing you along.
Does such a position even exist? If not, does your boss have the authority to create that position? Does your poss have the authority to pick who fills that position?
It's fairly common for bosses to talk about things, but they get vetoed by higher authorities for any number of reasons.
Personally I think people should ALWAYS be looking for a new job. Always look for better opportunities. When you look at a lot of different companies, the chance of moving up increases significantly.
I don't suggest waiting around to find out what your company will do UNLESS you really like the job and company. Otherwise, be proactive about your career. Go out and get it.
Okay good boss, asking about your career goals, providing training and generous pay rises. Cool cool.
Yeah, I feel ya. Sometimes things take time and you really want life to advance forward so, you can make it big / prove to yourself that you can make it. Then feel a sense of pride rush over you looking back at the journey you walked to get there, sounds beautiful.
Now, here is my opinion: Stick with it. You have a great career, it sounds really engaging & positive, and you make pay increases which not everyone can say to have that. You even have a swell boss which again not many can say they have. Point is, you are extremely lucky & fortunate and you clearly didn’t come to this job overnight it took years of skill & professionalism, it is truly paying off big time although falling short of that big breakout moment. Please stay in the career, trust me it will happen. Don’t let impatience kill off this opportunity because it will happen. Patience is a crap game no one wants to play though it is a game where once you stick around long enough, you become a big winner. I’m proud of you of your hard work, keep at it and you’ll feel proud too.
