While I 'hated' school as much as the next kid... History, Maths and Science subjects were my favourite. A bit difficult to pick one, but seeing that I waned to become a History Teacher I have picked History.
Because the Netherlands, where I am from, is a small country and a lot of European History, later global History, is tied to the Country... We learn quite a bit about History of the various nations around the world. So for me it would then be 'Global History'.
-Favourite Teacher; none really stand out. They were all friendly and professional, one was of course more liked than the other... but can't say I favoured or 'hated' one.
I'll pick a Maths teacher I had; she was also the one responsible for my class. So with any questions or concerns you would go to her. Her parents lived in quite a big mansion somewhere in the middle of nowhere; and he has hosted some parties there. Mind you, school parties organised by your designated teacher were allowed; so this of course didn't raise any eyebrows. Parents dropped us kids off, and picked us up later on.
-Proms are not really a thing in the Netherlands; school/ year parties were being held in some 'disco'. Legal drinking age in the Netherlands was 16, so that was good; but teachers weren't too bothered (it's not their responsibility to raise the kids).
-The thought is nice; just to see how my 'class mates' have ended up. But my (high) school period has been difficult. Lol, I think they'll be shocked to see me... I was such an insecure, little (seriously, I was always the smallest) boy who didn't stand out; I dare to say that is different now. I may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I do stand out 🤣
I love reading your post because they're always so detailed and revealing!
Thank you!
What can I say... I've got a lot to say, I like typing, and if I feel a need to leave an 'opinion' behind I will also have to explain why I have come to that 'opinion' 😉
I picked history.
I wasn't that into school in high school. I guess my favorite subjects were art and auto mechanics.
But in college, I particularly loved
Ancient art history. (honors course)
Ancient history.
Tribal art. (honors course)
Cultural anthropology.
Geology.
Also music theory and electronic music.
1) Did you have a favorite teacher? Why that person?
Mrs. Roemer in art. She actually had a doctorate in art. I got the top grade in both of her courses and we became friends.
Mr. Holliday in Geology. I got the top grade in his courses and went on a three day field trip to the Owens Valley in California with one of his classes.
We became friends. He told me about a rock hound who had died and said rock hounds were going to his yard to get rocks he had collected. His entire yard was stacked with all kinds of rocks from geodes to obsidian to agate, etc. I loaded up a couple of boxes.
2) Did you go to prom? Are you still in touch? No. I was more of a surfer, hippie, rocker. I wasn't interested in wearing a suit and dancing.
3) Did / would you go to your reunion? Why or why not? I went to my 10 year reunion because, at the time, I owned a condo that was very near the fancy hotel venue. I knew some of the people there and it was fun seeing a few of them, but none of my circle of friends attended. It wasn't my thing.
I love cultural anthropology in college!! My former students have told me that there is actually a class called Garbology where they examine artifacts from garbage and try to recreate the narrative by going through foods receipts wrappings. My students say was one of the best classes they ever took! I could never have done the music thing. I never learned to play an instrument in school but I picked up the bass on my own and have been trying for the past decade to play. The only thing I can play is Queens another one bites the dust! Geology was also a fun class! My grade was the highest out of my entire high School - 99% - on the state test. I'm still strangely proud of that!
I just remembered on thing about one geology course. At one point, we were learning about continental drift and plate tectonics. There was a black guy in the class. He was a really cool guy - a straight shooter, not ghetto at all. But I was surprised that he couldn't identify Africa or any of the continents on a map. Man, did his prior schooling fail him. I helped him out.
I just noticed part of your question.
I didn't study for a career. I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living.
As it turned out, I happened to get handed a job through a friend's mom who was a professional secretary and was friends with the VP of an auto insurance company who lived down the street.
They were starting a trainee program for motor vehicle damage field adjusters/appraisers. I got hired and the company trained me.
It turned out to be a great job and a wonderful company. The salary was really good and the benefits were amazing. I retired with a pension after 30 years.
Physics, astronomy, literature/composition/essays.
It did not. It fucking did not...
I did have a favorite teacher.
They saw me when I couldn't even see myself.
They were right and I was wrong in some ways.
I did not have a prom. Schools here don't have that.
As for reunion, I am torn.
Probably not, but I can't say for certain.
It is whatever my brain chooses at that particular moment before making a decision.
I did NOT do well in physics. Too much maths. Im with you on literature, I was introduced to so many fascinating books, poetry, narratives, religious based, sagas, journalism by my teachers
I liked quite a few of these, tbh. It's hard to choose.
Understood!

Favourite subject was history, however it was physics and maths that were aligned with my degree side of things.
It's funny that you say that! I much more enjoyed the sciences and literature than history when I was in school but I ended up becoming a history teacher! The kids were happy about that because whenever they needed help right before a test with a science or literature class they actually would ask me!
my favorite subject in school was Geography... just because I liked "random" tons of facts about it, and also drawing/painting representative maps
my work has nothing to do with geography, lol
I don't have a college major, I quit it half-way
my favorite professor was our high-school mentor... why? because he was our mentor
I did go to prom but to skip the prom... my girlfriend and friends from school, are still my best friends in this life so yes, we're in touch
bigger reunions and gatherings, last ones happened till early 20's... lol
since them, I've only kept up with way smaller circles of school people, or one on one on occasion, many times I meet them again by chance, lol
That's fantastic! I never expected geography from anyone!! I like it too! I never got the chance to teach AP Human Geography which still makes me sad! Have you read "Prisoners of Geography" by Tim Marshall? Or the magisterial "Guns Germs and Steel by Jared diamond? If not definitely treat yourself!!
I liked all my science classes. I liked Physics the most but in senior year i had an English teacher I really liked and so I learned Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Julius Caesar and some other stuff. I actually went back to my old high school ten or 12 years later and visited him.
I majored in Computer Science so I guess liking science and technology aligns with that.
I never went to the prom. I really did not have many friends and really did not like many of the kids in my class.
I never went to any reunions either. I did not like these kids thirty years ago why would I go to see them now?
History and sciences were my favorites. I also liked economics and law but I only had that for 4 years in high school.
You pick my faves too! Economics and criminal law were two great classes! I ended up taking sociology, child psychology and psychology as an undergrad. GREAT classes!! Which science was your favorite?
First questions
1. Music
2. No, but my spare time does.
3. It would not have had I continued.
Second questions:
1. Yes. My 8th grade English teacher taught us to think rather than just memorize.
2. Yes, we went as a group. Still in touch with most.
3. Did not go to the 10th but will probably go to 20th
That's wonderful that you chose music! What do you play or sing? It's also wonderful that you're still in touch with the crew! I hope that 8th grade teacher is still alive I'm sure he/she would love to hear from you!!
Social studies. Sort of. Yes (political science). Yes, naïveté. Yes and yes. No, not sure who would organize it.
What humanities was your fav? Im a poli sci undergrad myself!
Holocaust Class was the realest class I ever fucking took.
They do that in middle school here. Yes, its brutal.
Design Technology. It was the most fun and we were allowed to be very creative in that class. It was the only class I looked forward to.
And it does relate to what I'm doing right now. I dropped out of architectural technology and industrial design in college. I also dropped out of carpentry, but I'm in the web design and digital marketing field at the moment (self learned). And it is fun
That sounds like a great class! My son is currently going for mechanical engineering which given his proclivity with Legos from an early age is really not surprising. Sounds like you're pretty handy with your hands and your mind!
Did engineering but shifted to software engineering and did some grad dips and masters. Did have a science teacher who inspired me.
History for sure. It does relate to my career, as I’ll be using Stalin and Hitler as massive inspirations. That may sound odd at first but you’ll see, it will be glorious
Journalism, then Spanish.
Hooray for foreign language!! Are you fluent? Do you get a chance to use it? I never took a journalism class but it sounds awesome!
I was at about 75% because I lived in South America for a couple of years. But it's kind of getting lost now. I'm sure it would come back if I were there again.
That's great! Monolingual people stunt their own view and understanding of the world needlessly
Law :)
Did you become a lawyer?
Geography and history and nooooo
