Why do gym coaches have the stereotype of calling students by their surname and not their first names?

In most places you use surnames, those tend to have a greater chance of being unique. You can have multiple people with same first name, far less with same surname. Also it gives a degree of separation and more formality than using a first name which would be more informal.

LMAO... They're trying to sound serious, that's all. Remember the horrible gym teachers who would do that? It's along the same lines. It's difficult for these trainers to be taken seriously when they're in stretchy yoga clothes. Personally, I think I lose half my calories chuckling at my personal trainer when he makes his mean face.

I imagine because the kids they coach are listed by last name in wherever they document it

Many people have the same first name, while surnames are usually unique. Just think what happens when the gym coach says "Bob, give me 5 laps" and 10 guys start running.

Stereotypes exist for reason. Gym teachers get that stereotype because a lot of them call students by their last names.

Probably because there's more than one kid with the same first name, in some cases. If he called, John or Bob 5 kids will run over to him!
