Is it disrespectful to call old school staff by their first name?

So when I was in 6th grade like 20 years ago, there was a man who aided in the class room. His name was Paul. Well, I've interacted with him many times since then. He owns a construction company, and has worked on my house a couple of times. I started calling him by his first name years ago. He never seemed to mind. We are friends on fb, and he wished me a happy birthday. I said "thanks Paul, merry Christmas" he said merry Christmas back. I feel like it might be inappropriate calling him by his first name, but might be kinda weird to revert back to calling him by his professional name at this point?

If they're in a position of authority, I'd call them by their professional name. I called all my teachers Mr., Miss, Ms., or Mrs. I knew their first names, but I never called them by that. Honestly, I would still probably use the names I called them in school. One of my teachers in high school had a few of her former teachers as coworkers (she taught at the place she graduated from, and a lot of our teachers taught there until retirement). She still called them by what she did when she was their student, even as their coworker.

When my kids friends turned 18 I asked them to me by my first name. Most of my parents friends asked me to call them by their first name when I turned 18 so for me it feels more normal.

my son dated a girl in high school who was the daughter of a guy who was a teacher where I went to high school. I did not have him for a teacher but I certainly recognized him and called him Mr. Smith (not his real name) he said to me "please call me Jack (again not real name)" I told him he would always be mr. Smith to me.

Yea, I think that's rude. They're not classmates.

I still have a hard time doing that.
