Well for me I've done it a few times there was two companies and my town petroleum maintenance and I would go back and forth every three to five maybe seven years I would get my raises from each company but when I thought I deserve more and I wanted it and they couldn't do it at the time I would always leave and go to the other company and then the same thing would happen if that company somewhere down the road and I would go back to the first company and they would not want to give me my raise but they would give me my next raise the reason why I was leaving the other company and both companies were great I mean both were super great to me
And I was just lucky because I was good at what I did that's the only reason why that worked going back and forth00 Reply

Yes, I moved to Thailand and taught English. I threw caution to the wind and just did it. The reason I was successful at it, was because I was an American. Shit, let's face it; I can't even understand what the fuck Aussies and Brits are saying. The Thais loved American teachers. And another reason I was successful, was because the school was private, and I didn't give a shit. My second week on the job, and I was the highest booking teacher in the school. Why? Because I didn't give a shit. My boss loved me.
I had three hot sisters who just wanted to play Picionary. That's it. Most teachers are egomaniacs that need to force their crap on the students. Not me. I figured that out on day one. I had a Thai engineer that just wanted to learn English slang. Cool beans.
I hope to move back someday.

Ahh... Thailand. Yep... we're best buds now!

Have you been there? If there was ever a proverbial "candy store" Thailand is it. After about one year, I got an actual girlfriend. She was hot, but once you've experienced the candy store, it's hard to go back. - 6 mo
If you're referring to the Cafe... yeah I've seen it. Quite the menu. Two weeks was enough for me. I'm a northern boy so that heat gets to me!

Proverbial "Candy store"?

If we're talking about the same thing, we called it the "Gold Fish" bowl. I took friends to a couple of them, but have only partaken in one in Bangkok. Big mistake. - 6 mo
Yeah... we're on the same page

It's funny, because by Western standards, you would think you hit the jackpot at the goldfish bowl. Not in the land of smiles. I preferred the hunt. Me and my UK pal went out every night.
When you say you're a Northern boy, are you talking about Thailand? - 6 mo
The teaching English thing is interesting. Did you just fall into it or just show up at a school?

I paid to take a TEFL course in Pattaya. After 6 weeks, I graduated. I was tired of the rat race, and moved up North. There was just no way in fuck that I was getting a job at a public school. So later I traveled back South to visit my old school. I told the owner about it, and she hired me on the spot.
Once I knew it was a solid thing, I paid to illegally get a student Visa. I paid the dough and had the time of my life. When I decided to move back to America, my boss said I would be welcomed back anytime. - 6 mo

Ah, I wasn't sure. I spent a year up in Chiang Mai, and it is probably the best city on the planet. But I know what it's like to be a Gringo. I remember on Christmas that it was cool enough that I could turn my fan off. lol
The problem with Chiang Mai is, I couldn't get a job. So I headed back to the rat race. - 6 mo
I've heard Chiang Mai is much more traditional.
Did you know any Thai before going? - 6 mo
@Ariesman81
I crammed my ass off when I decided to go. There are tons of apps and even YouTube videos about learning Thai.
Check out
"Thai for Beginners - Lesson 1: Thai Consonants"
She is super cute and good at teaching Thai.
But you don't have to learn any Thai before going. But if you're smart, you will at least try. If you have a kind heart and show you're trying, the Thais will love you.
I remember going past a guy who was selling BBQ fish on the sidewalk. He said to me "Do you speak Thai?"
I just said: "Nit Noi." (a little bit) Him and everyone listening burst out laughing and loved my response. I cared enough to try, and that's all they wanted.

I meant for the teaching portion. I'm thinking of spending the winter in Brazil and you got me thinking this would be a good way to stay busy.

@Ariesman81
I wouldn't worry about that at all. The students you encounter will speak English. They will just want you to explain things that don't make sense.
I AM hungry
You ARE hungry
Arie IS hungry.
Why?
We take it for granite that our language makes sense. It doesn't.
I answered that in the best way I could...
"Passa ungrit baaaaa"
The whole room started laughing.
"The English language is crazy,"
The best moment of my life was when a friend pulled some strings and allowed me to teach for two days at the Father Ray Foundation. It was a trade school for handicapped teens.
A girl in a wheel chair asked me what Madonna's last name was. Who the fuck knows?
I told her that Madonna doesn't have a last name. She called bullshit on that. Fuck! I had to go home and Google it.
"Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone"
If you can pull this off, you will learn more about the English language that you ever learned in your entire life.

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. Gone more than four months without a full time job. Had to start doing doordash which sucks. And now I am about to start subbing just to make ends meet.

I want to do that. Quit my job with no other job lined up and have it go well.

I once left a position without having another job in place. It was a bold decision driven by the need to realign my professional goals with my personal values. Initially, it felt uncertain, but I used the time to deepen my skills and network actively. I focused on identifying what I truly wanted in my career, which led to more authentic opportunities. Financial preparation and self-reflection were crucial in this period. It’s important to have a supportive plan in place for both the emotional and practical aspects of this transition.

I have in the past but it’s stupid to do especially if you have bills to pay and want to keep food in your mouth , but if the job is stressing you out and making your life a living hell then quit but you should at least try to give the company some notice that you are leaving so you will have a better chance landing your next job. If it’s a job you really hate just give them a weeks notice if you can

I work Walmart. To be honest, I don’t think they would really care what I would do. In fact, they don’t care about me anyway.
- Asker6 mo
And I can guarantee you that no matter where I apply to, they would treat me the same as well.
- 6 mo
Well the truth is no job really cares about anyone , we are just a number to them for the most part that they can easily replace , so as much as you hate your job try not to burn your bridges , just tell them you are putting your notice in and give them a week , when other companies call them they will ask if you gave notice and by law they can not lie. Whether they like you or not , I worked as a Branch Manager and I had other companies call me asking about one of my ex employees and if they asked me did they give notice , I would say yes if they did , even if I didn’t care for that employee I wasn’t going to lie. So if they just walked out , I would say they just walked out. So it’s better to leave on good notice just so you don’t screw yourself over with another job. Especially if you don’t have one lined up.
- Asker6 mo
Wait, if jobs don’t care about their employees, why would they care about how we quit?
- Asker6 mo
For once, I just don’t want to do the right thing anymore. It gets me nowhere. I see tons of people who have quit their jobs and found another one so easily. I want that to happen to me. I want to be like them.

I can tell you the countless of times how much I want to run away from my job. Anytime I see that exit, I have this urge to run.

Yes. I was working retail and my manager and coworkers had absolutely no respect for my time or work ethic. I don't believe in doing the bare minimum, but that also doesn't mean I'm going to overachiever and make up for everyone else on my team. It had gotten to the point where I would work 10 hours alone because every other person called out and the manager would come in 5 hours late. I had to quit before it ruined my self esteem

If you can get started in IT, I'd just do that until you find something else tbh. IT can suck, especially if you didn't go to school for it, but at least a lot of these companies will allow you to work from home or at least do hybrid. That's enough for me to say it's worth it.
- 6 mo
no I was terminated or assassinated, depending up on how one looks at it. I should have quit in hindsight, it was obvious.
it turned out ok, but I changed directions each time. make sure you have some $ in the bank for that rainy day and it's best if you line up something in advance if you can.
00 Reply 2.9K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. I have done it a couple of times. The last time I decided to retire and another time I had to take a leave of absence to have a knee replacement. When I got back the boss gave a really crappy job and it was pretty obvious he wanted to get rid of me. I stayed fort two weeks and then told him I was leaving because I wanted to leave before the job turned into a bad memory.
00 ReplyI did quit a job without it being lined up. I mistakenly took a job in a very toxic organization and had a breakdown. I could not work there any longer. I had to leave to save myself. The lesson I learned is be very, very careful before excepting a new job.

Why is it a bad idea though? Let’s look at reality here. Many people have quit their jobs without a job lined up and it turned out just fine for them. I mean, an employer can not not hire you.
- Asker6 mo
You for real mean that? 🤨
- Asker6 mo
Yeah because your job actually cared. Or at least I think so anyway. Employers these days don’t care about their employees. They’re all about the money.
- Asker6 mo
That’s why I want to leave. My job won’t care. Also, I was raised that way too.
- Asker6 mo
I may be younger than you but my parents taught me the same thing. And I’m definitely trying to fight the urge to up and quit but it’s getting harder everyday.

Never.
