What high school clique did you belong to
I was a jock, but not fully embraced by all of them, because I liked rap music, I was from the city (they were suburban and kinda preppy), and it just wasn’t cool in the 90s for white kids to be into hip hop. It was not “the easy path”, lmao. Some of them even used to call me the W-word😱😂
I can’t lie…I DID get the back-to-school edition of this hip-hop magazine “The Source” in the summer of ‘96, and some of the models in the fashion section were wearing the goggles (which was a new trend that never really even caught on), and I almost considered getting some🤦♂️😂 SO glad I didn’t😂😂😂
I was cool with 90% of the other jocks since we all played ball together, but there were a few guys who just really decided they didn’t like me, and that would affect hanging out with people, like it’d be too awkward to have me and the guys who didn’t like me there.
If we’re going by “where did you sit in the cafeteria?”, I was actually one of three allowed exceptions at “The Black Table”, lmfao, which was actually two tables, but whatever😝 Right next to the snack bar, so we were right on Main Street…. but I also worked at the snack bar to get financial aid for the tuition, and my boys always had jokes when I was working. So that was fun😅😂
But the funniest part was the jocks who didn’t like me desperately wanted the approval of many of the Black dudes, lmao, and they’d come over and awkwardly (and unsuccessfully) try to be all cool, and they’d just always look goofy, and I knew they were mad that I was “in” and they weren’t😂 And that always kept them at bay too. They could never give me too hard of a time, because I could tell they were also SCARED of the Black dudes, and all I’d need to do is be like “yo, let me tell you what these dudes call me when I’m NOT with you”, and if it didn’t get them slapped around, it’d still be awkward and then they really wouldn’t like them, which was again what they ultimately desired. I don’t know, it was a funny dynamic to me.
So, kind of a jock, but kind of with a 90s B-boy vibe, haha
I was far from a cheerleader, also far from a jock lmao. I was a picked on kid…. I was also a bit of a computer geek and a bit of a nerd though I was a quiet one. Shy kid / picked on bunch I’d say.
So we didn't have that clearly defined groups. Yes most people had at least one group but that didn't mean you had no part in another.
I was often a link between the popular people and what you would call "nerds" I guess. We didn't have cheerleaders officially but that would probably have been my group.
Most hobbies aligned better with the "nerds". Thats why I often was with them. I had enough good friends with other popular kids though. Generally it wasn't that important, but often when it came to to things like party invitations or birthdays I was included while a lot of them were not.
My school had less than 100 kids in the entire student body. My graduating class was 12 people, and we were the second largest graduating class that school had seen (the largest being 14 at the time). We didn’t have enough room for cliques, let alone play music by OutKast on a regular basis.
During high school, I was more aligned with the "IT geeks" and academically focused group. I was deeply interested in learning and technology, which eventually guided my career path. While I might not have been the most popular kid, I valued the friendships and connections I made with like-minded peers. Being part of this group allowed me to explore my interests and laid the foundation for my future endeavors in education and career development. Each clique has its unique characteristics, and the key is to find where you feel most comfortable and true to yourself.
