I'm not sure I'd feel the need to work. I wouldn't mind jettisoning some of the more tedious parts but I've loved every career I've had aside from an insane choice to get a teacher's license to teach advanced middle school math and high school math. I taught the subject I spent most of my life pursuing at the Community College level and its much nicer teaching kids who are paying for their education. Though I do mostly financial stuff now, I like chat but I majored in philosophy , literature, and comparative theology as an undergrad. Post graduation came the shocking realization that very few people were getting six figure salaries based on their knowledge of Kierkegaard. As. such as I enjoyed studying g it I wound up working as a chef and bartender in school then decided to attend professional culinary school in NY state. I loved that but its really suited for alcoholics and addicts so I got abuse was MBA.

I would work around my house and 30 acres to make our lives more self-sustainable. I would continue playing music (guitar and vocals). I would have fun traveling with my wife. I would continue reading and learning.216 Reply- 5 mo
Who's your favorite guitarist?
- 5 mo
Jimi played his guitar upside down! LOL

This is how it's done! - 5 mo
I disagree. It's not that they didn't make left-handed guitars, it was that they were rare, and more expensive. Jimi was poor, (like me.) He played the hand he was dealt. I met a friend that played his guitar upside down. The low "E" was at the bottom. He was really good, but it baked my noodle. I was kind of perplexed. LOL I think he was a terrorist.
Lliam, in the guitar world, you're still a puppy. Segovia played in concert until he was 93. His booking dates were still out for three years. When he passed, his best student, Christopher Parkening, took over this concert schedule.
Chris struggled with the meaning of life. He was truly gifted, but he gave it up to fly fish in Montana. Then Chris realized he was betraying his amazing gift, given to him by God.
So he got back in the game.

@saraupstairs. Yeah, Jimi even borrowed some guitars when he was young.
There were ambidextrous electric guitars like the Gibson SG. But he liked the Stat for some reason. Did they make left-handed Strats? Or maybe he liked having the wammy bar above the bridge so he could press it with his wrist while he picked.
You're right, Sarah. I never achieved mastery. I got really fast and could improvise leads all day long. One of my signature songs was Highway Star. I played some Deep Purple, Journey, Heart, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Captain Beyond, UFO and lots of other stuff. I did a great job of improvising the lead at the end of Free Bird.
But I was a garage band, rock guitarist. I also did the vocals.
When I got my first guitar, a cheap, Mexican acoustic, a guy my dad worked with generously agreedto come over and give me some lessons. My dad was a master machinist at a major aerospace company. The guy was an engineer.
He was a tall, slender black man with a cool goatee. Come to find out, he was a master flamenco guitarist and an all around guitar master. His fingers were a blur. I had never seen or heard anything like it.
He started off showing me the chords at the bottom of the neck, as well as how to do bar chords. He taught me some finger picking and how to fan the strings.
After he had taught me some basics, I went on to teach myself. I got into the early Beatles and then into rock.

It's hilarious how the classical guitarists look down on the Flamenco players.

Such is life... - 5 mo
@saraupstairs. Hmmm. I didn't know that classical guitarists look down on good Flamenco players.
That guy who gave me lessons could play dual leads and fan the strings while tapping occasionally on the body of the guitar with the nail of his pinky finger.
That video was great. Was one of those guys John McLaughlin? - 5 mo
Yes it was! He was the flat picker.

I can't find the video I wanted to show you, but the Flamenco player in the movie is Paco de Lucia.
He's a legendary Flamenco player.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oyhlad64-s
Classical players look down on him, because he's ONLY playing Spanish folk music. Forget about the fact that he's a guitar virtuoso and his fingers are faster than the wings of a bumble bee.
It's folk music! No one can respect that! He's scum. - 5 mo
Crap! The clip doesn't show.

@saraupstairs. That's funny. It's like purist jazz or folk musicians who look down on people who start blending in other styles.
I saw John McLaughlin twice with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Santana joined him on one tour. Carlos totally departed from his signature style to play complex, orchestrated music with John. I wouldn't have thought Carlos was capable of that kind of music. Those two guys shredded on Indian-style music. They must have rehearsed a LOT. It was amazing! - 5 mo
Lliam,
You would never survive music school. They would hate you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKCw3A_5lOo
They would hunt you down and kill you if you had eclectic music tastes like me. - 5 mo
@saraupstairs. LOL
That was a great video of Doc and son. Some of that old-timey rockabilly stuff knocks my socks off.
When I was a kid, an uncle gave me a grocery bag of 45 rpm records. It was a mix of all kinds of songs.
One that I love to this day was Hot Rod Lincoln by Johnny Bond. It made me fall in love with guitar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpuGFeSUoKg
When I was really young, our family went to Knott's Berry Farm one time and the Sons of the Pioneers were playing for free in the Covered Wagon Amphitheater. I was blown away. I couldn't believe that people could play stringed instruments like that. Mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and peddle steel trading off shredding-ass leads.
And talking about eclectic tastes. THIS is a song that would make purists burn a city down. It's actually one of my all time favorites. I hallucinate to this day when I hear it. I don't know how somebody could come up with something like this.

If that was the case, I would prefer a part time job.
I would still need the routine of getting up and I do love the stability in my life and the improvement I get when in a job.
And with a part time job I would have more time with my creative hobbies and possible being more active as well..10 Reply

Finding fulfillment in life often involves engaging in activities that provide a sense of purpose and meaning. Many individuals enjoy work, beyond just earning money, because it offers opportunities for growth, learning, and contributing to something larger than oneself. Personally, I value the satisfaction and enrichment that come from guiding others in their educational and career journeys. Even if financial needs were met without working, I believe I'd continue to seek out these rewarding experiences, as they provide me with a sense of accomplishment and joy.

MY GOD YES!
Nothing makes you as happy as freedom and nothing makes you as free as money.
What would I do with my time?
Well, I think that depends on the amount of money / income that I have.
Ultimately, I'd be doing what I do now in my free time, just a shitload more of it.
10 ReplyI wouldn’t feel the need to clock into work just to feel valuable
But I wouldn’t sit idly by either
If money was not at all a worry I would find activities to do that benefit the world to some capacity even if they don’t bring in a big pay check10 Reply- 5 mo
definitely not... I'm driven by the feeling of accomplishment and it's a beautiful and very motivating feeling... and I don't need others to appreciate my accomplishments... I can evaluate my work and enjoy what is done :D

I like working and I'm awful with to much time, never want to be in a situation again where I just sit at home - collecting money. Helps that I actually went into a field I care about and that brings me joy.

Arguably I do that now because I trade stock.
I view it as God has blessed me with the opportunity to bless others. It's not manual labor, and I work at my convenience. But I still feel compelled to put in work everyday to try to maximize my returns.

I love my job, and love going to work. Boring when not working… so even after I retire (soon) I already have other plans I want to do… not for money.

The idea sounds good on paper, but it’d get boring after a while. That’s basically a never ending paid vacation. Humans have an innate sense of wanting to be productive and feel they’re contributing.
