My cousin came from a poor family. His mother was a factory worker and his father did general labour. My cousin owns a computer technology business with 5,000 employees in one of the richest cities in China.
My other cousin was abandoned by her mother and raised by a father who was too lazy to control or discipline her. She now lives in a mansion bigger than a basketball player and her father was a poorly paid teacher.
When it came to school, I found, the more the odds were stacked against me, the better I did. I got rejected by a technology high school at 13 that I applied to when I was the smartest kid in the class.
When I was one of the dumbest kids in the art class, I got into a better school than 95% of my art class fellows.
In university, I found that the lower the class average, the higher my grade would be. If the class average was a B, my grade was an A. If it was a B-, my grade was a 90 or A+. If the class average was a C, my grade was a 95, or A+. If 50% drop out, I would get a 98 or A+ in the class.
I always did better when things were hard, than I did when things were effortless.
