What is the point of brake checking?

I don't get it.

I've been watching a couple of dashcam videos and I just don't get this practice. Other than people trying to scam others, is there a legitimate reason to brake check?

I've never seen that in my life, in person and never heard of it in my country.

If you suspect your breaks are faulty or at least not working correctly you can do a quick break to test if you are right or wrong. Before seeing a mechanic. The same thing with lights, tire pressure, ...

The problem you described are just people picking the wrong time and place.

No, you don't do this. Even though the other drivers should be aware of it and expect any kind of shit and be always prepared for an emergency break.

There could also be a child running onto the street which would cause an emergency break of the driver in front of you.

But for simply testing you choose an empty space, parking lot or street, and only accelerate to about 30km/h and watch the rear mirror befor stomping on the break
