Quite a touching story. AI says this is true as well... I had no idea was such a hazard to be a sailor, especialy for some of these Arab countries.

In summary: The boats have been abandoned by the owners (finances changed, markets changed and so are no longer viable) and so are left without fuel, food, sailers left without pay. They remain stuck on the ships.

Should something be done to ensure rights of sialors? What do you recommend?

One of the problems is maritime law gives you far less rights than regular law for example You don't have to pay minimum wage at sea. However the law does state that a country must offer assistance if a vessel is in trouble in it's waters. Given the middle east situation I'd expect they're praying the tides will carry them to friendly shores.

wtf. the owning companies should be made to go get these people by law enforcement. or law enforcement should help thesese guys out and then have these companies pay for it after the fact.

exactly! There seems to be no home on the sea. If they are from say... UAE... and they are in the waters of Canada... no right to go there.

yeah that's a situation the African refugees created. nobody wants to deal with the idiots in the see... so the very few people who got there by none of their own fault have to suffer.
