I do constructions (floating, though, and not for diving) - and we (the company) build - with carbon fibre among other materials.
It's just a question of getting the dimensions, pressures and the lay-up right.
Also - under high pressures - and not negative ones - glue-ing will not be exposed to shear forces or those that exceed their flexural modulus.

Materials expand and contract at different rates under extreme pressures or temperatures. To make a sub like that of different materials like Carbon Fiber is retarded. Especially when it wasn't uniform, as in not all made of one material. Also it wasn't even a perfect sphere which is the strongest shape. It was designed by morons b/c he wanted to use a diverse group of young students to engineer the thing and he paid for it with his life. Why don't you design a polymre sub and see what happens and you can be the next moron to implode. If I were you I'd stick to building kayaks.

Water pressures are well analyzed. Carbon fibres also are now nothing brand new any more. As long as the expected load is known, it's relatively simple to calculate the scantlings.
I do agree that a care-free (or unqualified) engineering may cause lethal problems during operation.
Can't say much about kayaks - my (our) own products range between 50 and 130 ft.
As for ''stupid ideas'' - I am confronted with those each working day (they come from the side of the consumers) AND: you DO need to be an engineer/architect to build things on which people's lives depend. ... l at least when you want to keep the users alive.

I would bet the hull crushed and they all died instantly. It was probably painless. I highly doubt they are just hanging around down there. They had 7 different emergency systems to bring that craft up and some didn't even need power to operate.
