I have a terrrible headache and runny nose and I don't feel like I can go to work but I am not sure whether it is ok to do at the second week of work. What do you think?

Get a doctors note, you have to take care of yourself. People should focus on their future instead of living in the moment. I know this off topic but company's don't care about their employees, everyone is very replaceable in life. Like I'm a sports fan, I grew up watching the Chicago Bulls on TV and the greatest basketball player ever, Michael Jordan. In 1998, the Bulls won 62 games and lost 20 games, they won the championship that year but before the season started in 1997-98, they had an asshole of a General Manager named Jerry Krause and told the team, you guys can go perfect all season and win the title but I am breaking this team, players that helped him make millions if not even billions of dollars. I know using a sports reference might not make sense in your case. But I'm using it as an example where you can be highly recognized at work but most company's won't care. You should always focus on your future financially and focus on your health. But yeah get that doctors note as proof, your work can't fire you for a medical purpose if they did you can sue them for wrongful dismissal depending on how long you worked there. If you missed weeks without pay try to see if there's health insurance or employment insurance you can receive for loss of income, works differently in different countries.

If you have to then you have to. Thing to remember especially here in America is that all the sick days you take are counted and if you miss a whole month or two of work in the working year that gets noticed and your company may let you go.
I tried to explain this to my sister who despite having a fancy degree and has some great well paying plumb jobs can't seem to keep them and can't understand why, she of course blames sexis but the real reason is because every month she take one or two or sometimes three days off sick for her time of the month, now she might get away with it if she took those days in lieu of holidays or worked from home but she insists she is entitled to sick days, so at the end of the year her company tallies up her sick days and can see she's missed 3 days per month and a bit of quick math 3×12= 36 days in the year.01 Reply

But don't miss work! No, you don't want to do that.
Usually the first 90 days on a new job the employee is put on probation. That means it's your time to show them how you will do in the future.
Take something for your headache and go into work.
On the other hand, after you're not on probation anymore, you might want to ask your boss if he would like you to be a Maverick and come to work and work all day, or stay home so you don't get your coworkers sick 🤢 too.10 Reply

If you’re not feeling well, take care of you. Plus, when you’re sick, you don’t put forth your best effort. Let’s be honest, most companies don’t care if you live or die. Anyway, take care of yourself and if your managers have a problem with it, you’ll see what kind of people they are.

You don't control when you get sick. Had a guy get sick the day before he was supposed to start missed the first 3 days but kept me informed as a result his 4th day became his 1st day and that was 8 years ago.
20 Reply I'd have shown up and forced them to send me home. I'd think someone was flaky for calling out that soon so I wouldn't be able to but I'd show up so they KNOW I was sick and not think they need to worry about it happening too often.

Will you get fired for it? I seriously doubt it. But it will look bad and sets a bad precedence. If you get in the habit of it, you might not have your job long. More than once very few months is too often.

I’d say preferably no. I’m not a manager or anything but I’ve always had an unspoken rule with working like unless I can’t get out of bed or my balance is messed up I’m going in. Just don’t make it a habit like show the job you’re dependable and you’ll work even when you don’t want to. Now if this is a small first job thing, do it it doesn’t matter too much since first job but if it’s a career then wait a little bit

If you’re sick then you’re sick. If ANY employer won’t respect that, then it’s not a good place to work. Life happens and there’s more to life than work

I’d prefer that if one of my employees were sick that they let me know as soon as possible that they’re not gonna be coming in.
11 ReplyI'd be pissed at you if you brought a cold into work and then a few days later another worker got it and it passed around to each coworker. We'd all know who it came from.
But at the same time, I get that even if it wasn't your second week, there is pressure to show up at work even when you're sick. So I wouldn't blame you.
If you have a job where an unfocused/distracted worker could end up making a mistake that costs the company money or worse hurts someone (for example, like if you work somewhere where there's heavy machinery).
If you have a job where you have to interact with customers I definitely would not want you there if you are visibly sick.

I think people are relieved when someone doesn't show up sick on the job. It seems like even the common cold lasts twice as long anymore.

00 ReplySounds like a bad idea, headache and sniffles are a terrible excuse, blow your nose, take a couple mother and go to work like an adult.

Not good. For me it put a checkmark in the wrong box when I had employees who did things like that so early on. I didn't fire them on the spot, but they had to make it up in some way later in order to get back on my good employee list.

If you're sick, then you're sick. Is there any way you could work from home?

Unless you're dead you're going in. No negotiation. No flexibility. Get some sleep, drugs and a pep talk to yourself.

Calling in sick is never ok
02 Reply- 1 y
I’ve only called in 3 times maybe 4 times in my life. those times I’d consider acceptable since I literally was so sick I couldn’t sit up out of bed for anything. But I’ve seen people call off for a little headache or something small like that no go in get the hours. But my work values are different from most. I’ll work 365 days a year unless I’m that sick
That's reasonable actually but like you I've had to pick up slack from someone who's just got like a mild cold or a headache.
