Why isn't my husband listening to my strategy of saving money?

In our relationship everything is backwards and by that I mean I am the saver and my husband he loves fancy luxury. We are bought age 30. I am not the typical wife that spends $100 on make up I used dollar store make up and get all if my vanity needs at the Dollar store , My husband tells me that it's a turn off for him. I forced a lasagna that cost me $2.50 to cook it myself when at the store it can cost you $12 at least. If possible I tell people if they don't want something to let me know before they donate their unwanted stuff at goodwill. Now we are looking at homes. I am thinking in buying a townhouse it's perfect it's cheaper price now my husband he wants a $300,000 house which I think it's crazy and insane. The town house cost approximately 150,000 if you think about that is a huge difference and a lot of savings my husband complains that he hates town house it looks tacky. I mean I've have met so many people that have bought a luxury fancy home investment in the trash because later they don't know how are they going to get the money to pay the next house mortgage years later end up loosing their home. Yes I will admit I can be cheap because I hate debt I hate over spending. I mean we do not need a $300,000 the whole point is to not be stressed and be able to save.

Well, couldn't he equally ask why you aren't listening to him?

Clearly you both have very different ideas about these things.

I did ask my husband and his thinks it looks cheap and tacky. I mean we can definitely afford it.

As I say you simply have very different ideas about what you want and what you place value on.

You do not want to over extend yourself and take on risk and the cost of borrowing and thats completely legitimate and makes perfect financial sense, especially as we are moving into uncertain times and the possibility of depreciation of house prices is very real. If it were a boom time however, your strategy would not necessarily make sense as prices increasing over time could mean that you aren't saving yourself anything by buying later and may well be better off having a large debt which is reducing over time due to inflation etc.

Equally however your husband clearly does not want to live in a town house, he does not want to own that sort of property and because he doesn't to him it would be overpriced at any price because he simply does not want that life experience, to him he would rather leverage credit in order to raise his standard of living right now, that is a real benefit, it may not be recorded on a balance sheet but that doesn't make it invalid.

You need to sit down together and try to find something you can both agree to.

Where are you trying to get to and what path can you take which you are both comfortable with in order to get there, this may require compromise or out of box thinking.

It depends on your income. If you can afford it then it could be a good investment. /if not it can bankrupt the two of you.
