If companies have no incentive to spend on research and development life would be missing a lot of amenities and niceties that we currently have. That being said capitalism has many pitfalls that were not foreseen by Adam Smith - pretty much the founding father of capitalism- didn't foresee. It's not as simple as building a better mousetrap. Since th early 19th century in this country, business has expanded beyod small businesses where an craftsman made and sold goods. Heny Ford made that out of fashion when he realized that assembly line manufacturing was more efficient than a single person making everything that went into a manufactured product. The downside to this was it created urban poor type of positions. Lots of repititive jobs where the cost of manufacturing became so importantant that he would travel to Central and Eastern Eurippe every year to find people willing to work for a penny less an hour than the emigrants he encouraged the previous year. When any of his employees complained about - or at least discussed organizing into unions for a living wage- he, and many other business tycoons screamed "communist" & had both government and private (Pinkertons) bring violence to the mix. About 6 years ago the tax laws were changed so that business had to pay far less income tax than previously. All this managed to do was make corporations buy back their own stock to raise prices and then the.05% of the employees eligible for stock options make a lot more $ selling stock. Very, very little of it saved a single business or increased R&D, anything that would share the wealth a little bit was discarded. The only time companies have actually shared in the wealth is when laws have forced them to.

That sounds so fake! Profits of companies are usualy less than half the sale price i mean if McDonald's charged me $6, the chicken probably cost them around 3$ for a portion just 50% profit of the 6... which is necessary... to pay the workers and rent a place and pay electric bills.

We compare what various places charge to see who is overcharging.

So the profits are usually pennies only multiplied by "millions and millions served".
