My boss at my old job wanted to fire my brother and figured they might as well fire me, too. That was almost 2 years ago. One of my friends had been waiting to hire me for about a year, so I took the job. On the way home from my new job, I stopped by a place I used to work about 6 years ago. They offered me my old job back, which I declined. I called them back later and said I would take the job, because the new job was barely paying the bills. Now I work too much with 2 jobs but have plenty of money.

I had a choice between being a Librarian at a university again or a Claims Customer Service Advocate at a health insurance company. Even though the Customer Service job was going to pay significantly less than the Librarian job, I chose it because I wanted something more challenging and where I would be doing a lot more tasks and I'm so glad I chose the job because I feel so productive and like my life has purpose.

Not that the Librarian job wouldn't have given me a sense of purpose but I feel like I wouldn't have been doing as much work there as I am doing with the customer service job.

I was the natural extension of 2 things...

    • My work history in 3 prior careers, the US Army (leadership), Fortune 100 (operational experience and analytics), and private Equity (doing deals and strategic thinking).
    • I got tired of working with / for idiots. I wanted more control over my time and my life. I started my own consulting firm working with manufacturing businesses, private equity funds, investment banks, and hedge funds to do due diligence on the buy side of deals, optimization of acquisitions after the deal, and rescuing companies in trouble.

I just ended up where I am now by chance. I've had all kinds of manual labor jobs and I was also the primary caregiver to my son for many years while I worked part-time. After my marriage was over I ended up moving with my son to some land that I inherited. The property is somewhat self-sustainable in that it pays for itself. For the time being I'm semi-retired. How long that will last, time will tell. I may end up working again.

I studied for my current job at university, but most of the time I have worked for companies in related fields up to quite recently. Only when I started working freelance -- due to circumstances beyond my control -- did I start in the exact field of my studies.

You don't always get to choose the job you do, mostly the market puts options in place where you can choose from.

Well for one thing I never tried doing anything else and at 15 not many opportunities outside of minor jobs at restaurants which is where I started as a hostess helper. Today I own that restaurant/bar.

Many reasons. 1. Because my options were really limited at the time. 2. The upside was I could potentially make significantly more than my previous job. 3. it was a challenge and I like a challenge 4. i could set my own hrs. That really appealed to me.

My present occupation: back then I had no other opportunities in my profession and I needed an income.

The last 6 years weren't too bad, but I'd prefer to work with trained specialists instead of local morons.
