Mental health workers of any kind require the thickest skins of any profession. We not only hear all the complaints and all the tragedy, but also hear all the rage and anger from everyone. If anyone has anything terrible going on, we hear about it. People want to kill themselves. We have to talk them out of it, and we have to do it at all hours. We put people in hospitals they don't want to be in for their own protection, and they don't like it; they let us know about it. The list of problems goes on and on and on.
I take care of combat veterans that other people don't want to touch, because their stories are so disturbing and upsetting. Every professional that I know who does this work winds up with vicarious PTSD, and I'm no exception.
Good point. I was trying to keep it broad. Should have said "medical professional"
Cops SHOULD, but a perusal of Youtube shows just how many lose their temper and cost their cities hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I think teachers. They are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Too progressive and one side roasts. Too conservative and the other roasts. Down the middle and both sides roast. Too nice. Too strict. I could never do it.
TY for saying that. I appreciate it
In public occupations, politicians often require the thickest skin due to constant scrutiny and criticism. In private jobs, roles like security personnel, bouncers, and referees demand resilience to handle tense situations. I find umpires and referees among the most professional and objective, as their primary role is to enforce rules impartially, regardless of external pressures. Their ability to make quick, fair decisions amidst heated situations is a testament to their professionalism and objectivity. This skill is honed through years of experience and dedication to maintaining integrity in their field.

prison guards. i knew many screws over the years and they all had plenty of horror stories., even more than cops.
Words shouldn't hurt. Gotta relax.
I worked in prisons and I don't think you have. I worked as a prison doctor for about 4 years. What I saw mostly was that Preston cards who are not sadistic to prisoners have it relatively easy and those that act sadistic guy have a really rough time with the prisoners. Behavior is a choice. Those who act like decent human beings have a relatively decent time from those who act like monsters. Get treated like monsters.
Receptionist. I did it for a few years. You would think people go on vacation to relax. Some are just there to complain about everything.
Yup cops 💯
But do they... Do they REALLY?
