when i got my last job, which was great but also led to me getting this job i have now, i was just standing around in 5-in-3‘s and they had just fired a tour violinist. i wasn't really looking for anything at the time and it would normally have taken a year of auditions and politics to even get (not quite that bad, but pretty much), but the music director was not wanting anything to do with it and 2 of the musicians there knew me and said i could do it. he said, is that right? and i said yes and he hired me

the job i have now i was backstage at Lollapalooza and the singer said, oh yeah i've heard of you, which was a little odd for someone in her world to have heard of me in my world, and the next morning at 5am my agent called saying her record company had called her and i only had the weekend to decide, which is a whole other big story

we were out one night before Christmas and got to talking about all this and it turned out the only way she had “heard of me” was, i had been backstage at Hyde Park a few months earlier and had met her, not much more than hi how ya doin' and great show

Depends on the area. Often it is. While I am selfemployed networking is a lot of my job. The thing is, its not that what I do is irrelevant. The opposite, I just can do a much better job with an good network. I thihk its less about ignoring w at you do, but giving yourself A higher ceiling because of the options you are given.

No that's not true. Not even close. Knowing people can sometimes help, but if you don't know anything, nobody will recommend you.

People put their own reputation on the line when they recommend someone. If they recommend someone who is totally unqualified it will reflect very badly on them. If you are good at what you do, and your co-workers know it, that can sometimes get you in the door of a good job. That is a lot of 'ifs', all of which are dependent on you knowing something and being good at what you do.

You are mostly on your own. Learn as much as you can about your profession, including learning about areas related to it. Knowing people MIGHT get you in the door somewhere, but don't count on that.

Partly, if someone knows that you are good at what you do it definitely helps. Networking is important and having contacts and buddies in the same line of work helps you stay ahead of the curve when it comes to new ways of doing things, technology, pay and taxes.

Many times, yes. Especially in corporate workplace. I've seen a lot of people climb the ladder because of who they knew and how those people could get them ahead than what they knew. And they usually knew way less than their colleagues. That really is the way the game is played unfortunately.

Yes. The number one rule if you want to increase your paycheck is to network. Those connections lead to higher paying jobs. You will never get paid what you think you're worth if you stay at the same company. A loyal employee is a low paid employee

It's both, depending on one's chosen field. As a software developer, it's easier for me to get interviews for teams with members who have worked with me previously and can give a recommendation. This does not change the interview. I still have to be able to demonstrate that I can meet their needs.

It isn't just over what you know it is also over your work ethic. Bosses promote their friends not the best employee and get rid of people that they don't like.
