Would it be wrong of me to spend this tip a customer gave me?

I started working at McDonald's the other day. Right before my shift I was walking into the building and a husband and wife walked in and I held the door for them. We talked about rain, and had a pleasant conversation. Fast forward to last night i was running orders out to the parking lot, and one of the orders was for them. He asked if I remember them, and I said yes, then he gave me a $20 tip. I declined but I eventually accepted. Anyways. I just read its a serious violation eccepting tips. I was just maybe gonna not spend it in case the customer tells my boss that he tipped me, and I can give it to whomever I need to.

Chances of guy telling manager? 0.1%? Chances of you getting more than a stiff talking to if he does? 10%? So that's 1 chance in 10,000 of facing a problem. Frankly, I think a number closer to 1 in 100,000 more likely.

As for accepting tips I always told people I’m not allowed to accept tips however if you drop it on the ground I’m allowed to pick it up.

I’d keep the $20 untouched for now and clarify the policy before doing anything.

In many chains, accepting tips is against policy and can technically be a terminable offense, even if the customer insisted. Since you just started, you don’t want this to be your first issue.

Options I’ve seen work:
- Quietly ask a trusted manager, “What should I do if a customer insists on tipping?”
- If they say it’s not allowed, offer to put it in a donation box or return it on their next visit.
