Finding a job in China is difficult. I’m a student, but I also want to work. How many years does it usually take to adapt to a foreign country?

I might have fallen for the tourist style trap but I have always been told that if you can speak Chinese fluently, ballpark two years for the average person, finding a job in China would be very easy because foreigners are seen as a sort of fashion accessory to many companies.

Of course me being tall, nordic and a man might help. Being in economy and finance does not hurt. Heck, have been told I'd likely be paid well just to attend meetings and nod a bit.

I'd still argue that using whatever upperhand you have is the way. If you speak Chinese and something else, you can immediately teach that. It also helps to ask the right people. If you ask a professor they are most likely to be able to help with research related professions. Usually you will have a harder time compared to natives.

If you ask a group working with tourists or foreigners, your value and their ideas in how to use it is very different.

All foreign countries are not alike. If you move from South Korea to China, the adjustment may be quite minimal. If you move from the mainstream culture of the US to China, it will probably be like moving to another planet.

One thing I would definitely do if I lived in a China is start a business. Its easier in China because you don’t need huge amounts of start up money to cover expensive legal licensing fees and you don’t have to follow millions of unnecessary red tape protocols designed to frustrate business owners with the sole intention of limiting the number of business owners in Canada so that people will be motivated to work for others.
