Why is work not more of a client-business model than an employer-employee model?

Why can't it be as simple as I provide a service and if you are satisfied and I complete the task, you pay me for that service?

Many people are able to make that work. However it requires much more work in the beginning, completely hands on, and also requires either having good people skills or having a partner with good people skills.

I'll tell you what else is needed besides your website, which, as a matter of fact, is a very nice website. The other thing that is needed is your personality, your commentary, your reassurances, and your explanations about the good work that you do. I would not hire you based solely on the attractiveness of your website, but I might very well hire you if I could talk to you about what I needed and you could give me assurances that you could do it at a reasonable price. That's really what all this is about. You need human contact, and if you are unable to provide it for whatever reason, you need to essentially hire a salesperson to help you with this. Many people, even independent contractors, have been successful by contracting with a salesperson and paying them a percentage of the business they bring in. I think that you're a real creative guy, and you could do this sort of thing. It might work out really well for you. For reference, hiring a salesperson and paying them a percentage of the business they bring in is called paying a salesman on commission. I have known plenty of salespeople who worked this way and made a good living at it, and the people they represented were happy with the results. It's kind of a win-win, and I think you'll hopefully see it that way.

by the way, I get SSDI and NOT SSI, so your tax dollars aren't really paying for me. It is a fund that has been paid into by employers and workers. I don't know how I paid enough into it to last me until retirement, but somehow it works. It will convert over to retirement once I am of age.

No, seriously, I have never been able to hold down traditional, full time work. 25 jobs in 15 years span. It just became too exhausting getting fired. I have Medicare which I rely heavily on. I was in the ER just a few weeks ago having a psychotic meltdown. They had to inject Ativan into my ass to calm down.

Remember that the only reason to be an employer is to make money off the labor of others, while you don't do any work, or at least not very much of it. The honest person works for themselves.

So, if you're not so good with people, or it doesn't sit well with you, and perhaps that is the case, then you need to hire a commissioned salesperson instead who is good with people. We all have our skill sets, and yours may have much more to do with the kind of work you now do and not so much with interacting with people. That's okay. But you need to get somebody that can help you with this so you'll get some business.

To have initial funds, that is the beauty of commission sales: all you have to do is promise them a percentage of the business that they bring in. That is, if somebody comes in and you make a thousand dollars from them and your salesman gets a 10% commission, you give them $100. Lots of salespeople work on commission this way and do well at it if they're good sales. You can see that you don't have to pay them anything if they don't bring any business in.

In practice, there *is* that model: it’s called freelancing/consulting/contracting. The reason traditional employment dominates is mainly:

- Companies need stability, control, and long‑term commitment.
- Many workers value steady income, benefits, and lower risk.
- Laws/taxes/benefits are built around the employer–employee structure.

If you want “client–business” dynamics, build skills that are easily packaged as services (design, coding, marketing, trades, etc.), start as a side gig, then grow a client base until you can step away from employment.

Actually it is the taxpayers that fund me, including you! I am just allowed to make $1500 extra a month without risking my benefits. I have never been able to hold down stable, full time work anyways due to my conditions, so at least I am able to do sometime even if it is just a small supplement.
