Why do all the jobs I want either need degrees, overwork, or low pay?

Every job I want either requires years of college and debt, for you to work excessive hours, or doesn't pay enough.

Stop looking for a job and start making your own. AI is usurping the jobs of most of the cognitive jobs anyway. For example I know a guy who had over a 4.0 GPA in high school in an A+ rated school, he started college 2 years early and went on to double major in computer science and mathematics in his undergraduate years. His professors recommended him for the PhD program in Mathematics at Princeton University, but he passed that up for a high paying job at a fortune 500 company. While working he earned a masters degree in computer science from one of the top engineering schools in the country and got his name on several software patents and quickly rose through the ranks and was leading teams of developers. He's unemployed now. When he looks at what AI can do in software development, he says it does what he and his entire team spent a month on in minutes for a $20 a month subscription fee. So even if you sent your entire youth doing everything the system told you to do in order to get a good job, you are now worth less than a fast food meal once a month. Time to pack it up and change directions. Make your own business doing something people demand and do it well. Stop expecting the system to provide a job for you.

And that is just one of many stories just like that. I could give you another 20-30 people that are in similar shoes with slightly different technical degrees but similar levels of performance and work history...

The hard truth is there's a huge pool of graduates out there who just need a job and will take minimum wage entry positions. A degree isn't something special anymore, a degree is the norm. If you haven't a degree or a good trades qualification employers will look down at you.

There's a huge pool of older experienced people who've lost their jobs to AI or cost cutting exercises. All chasing the same job as you.

Employers are inundated with applications so they bring in stuff like. Sandwich maker. Must have degree and 5 years experience of bread based engineering.

I’ve seen this pattern with many people I coach, and I went through a version of it myself.

A few practical moves:

1. Separate “now” from “later” goals
- “Now” job: pays the bills, builds skills, is *good enough*.
- “Later” job: your target that may need a degree/portfolio/experience.

2. Look for skills, not titles
List 5–7 skills your dream jobs use (writing, data, sales, design, troubleshooting, teaching). Then search jobs by those skills, not the role name.

3. Use “stepping-stone” roles
Example:
- Interested in marketing but no degree? Start in customer support, sales, content freelancing, or social media for a small business.
- Interested in tech but no CS degree? Look at help desk, QA, low-code tools, basic data roles, or IT support.

4. Re‑check degree requirements
Many postings say “degree required” but hire people with:
- Strong portfolio
- Certifications (Google, AWS, CompTIA, HubSpot, etc.)
- Relevant projects or internships
Apply anyway if you’re close.

5. Guard against overwork traps
Some fields *usually* overwork (certain finance, big law, some startups). If you value balance, aim for:
- Mid‑sized companies
- Government or non‑profits
- Unionized or regulated fields

6. Choose a learning path with ROI
If school is needed, run the numbers:
- Tuition and living cost vs. starting salary
- Time to repay loans at a conservative salary
Community college + transfer or part‑time online programs can cut cost massively.

7. Experiment fast and cheap
Before committing to years of education, test:
- Free/cheap online courses
- Volunteer or freelance mini‑projects
- Job shadowing, informational interviews
