Why do people even those with degrees, struggle to get basic jobs?

Most of the time, it's because the degree path chosen had little if any correlation to the jobs available. For example, tons and tons of people today go to law school - a VERY expensive career path - but there are already far more lawyers than there are open positions for lawyers at existing law firms, so most law grads can't get a legal job. That means they either start their own legal practice (meaning they have to take on even more debt - assuming they can even get a loan - to get started), or they have to choose a different career path that their degree may have no relevance in.

How many people with English or Communications or Gender Studies degrees do you think the world has open jobs for? It's a small fraction of the people pursuing these degrees.

People pursuing a STEM degree are very likely to be able to get a job - usually a good-paying job - but STEM degrees are much more difficult to achieve, and require plenty of advanced math - and so lots of STEM students drop out or change their majors to something easier to get. That results in their degrees, in most cases, being much less in demand, and so their job prospects are lower.

And let's be honest, not everyone is capable of a STEM degree or a STEM job. Hell, tons of people who are going to college to get a worthless (to the job market) degree literally are wasting their time and putting themselves into debt for a piece of paper that the job market will never take seriously. The colleges have sold the message that EVERYONE needs to go to college to achieve success, but that's not only never been true, and isn't true now, but it's just the colleges trying to increase their revenues. Who cares if the students go into massive debt for a worthless degree, as long as the college gets its money.

This same message of "everyone should go to college" has almost completely destroyed vocational schools - and there are lots of good, NECESSARY jobs that those schools USED to train people for, that we don't have anymore. Not everyone wants an office job or is suited for one, and there are many jobs that make up our infrastructure that MUST be done to avoid a total societal collapse, and we aren't training people to do these jobs. The whole education system is an absolute mess and totally disconnected from the realities of the job market in the real world.

A lot of businesses are cheap AF, that's why.

Let's say they've got 2 applicants. One has a college degree, and one just has a high school diploma. They know that the college graduate is more qualified, but they'll need to pay him more, because of that.

The high school graduate isn't as qualified, but will still be able to do the job, and the company can pay them way less, because they don't have a degree.

Nine times out of ten, they're gonna hire the cheaper guy. They'll save money, and he'll be easily replaceable if need be.

Most employers are looking for qualified workers who have the ability, and experience, to do the job. That's much more important than someone who paid a lot of money and survived 4 or 5 years of college.

That depends on the university degree you studied. I study medicine, and 92% of medical graduates find work in their first year.

That's correct. But medicine is a difficult subject and medical degrees are expensive and take a long time to get. Most people don't want to do that much work, or just aren't suited for it. But those who do usually do quite well, though it's certainly not easy work either. You really need to love it to do it.
