14 years on and off as a bouncer at a live music vbar, because they have a lot of bands playing there and it got me out of the house. I got fired because they fired my brother and figured they better fire me, too. I did exactly as I was told by the head of security and was fired for it. When there were riots for George Floyd or whatever scumbag the police killed, the Autozone next door was being looted and there were buildings on fire down the street. My brother and I were the only ones who showed up to make sure the owner and his old parents didn't get killed. The guy with a thousand friends and nobody showed up to make sure he didn't die except us, and they fired us because they didn't like our attitudes. That's some loyalty for you. We did our jobs better than anybody they ever hired.

I sold police equipment for 20 years. The job market was tough for somebody without a college degree and I found this job because it was in the same building as another place that I worked and my former boss knew the boss over there and he put in a good word for me.

      Something similar happened to me.
When I was about 24, I worked in the shipping department of an electronics warehouse. I became good friends with a guy there who was my age. His mom was an executive secretary and was friends with a neighbor who was VP of an auto insurance company.
They were starting up a pilot trainee program and she arranged to get us hired.
I didn't know a fucking thing about insurance or auto body repair but they trained me.

7 years! I worked as a department secretary for a environmental engineering company in the biotechnology laboratory when bio tech was first coming out.

I absolutely loved that job and my coworker's as well.

I learned so much at that job!! I was also the secretary on the side to the Quality Assurance and Quality Control manager and he said that no one else ever took down notes of the meetings with the managers like I did. Big compliment!🙂

  • I spent about 11 years in one core role: education and career development advisor in a university setting.

    Why I stayed:
    - I had real impact—seeing students grow over several years never got old.
    - The role kept evolving: new programs, leadership responsibilities, and chances to innovate.
    - I had strong mentors and colleagues, which made growth easier without changing employers.

I only moved on when I realized I’d stopped feeling stretched daily and needed a new challenge to keep learning.

Hired by the Dept. of Education at the age of 23. Been there since and love teaching. I can and will retire soon with a pension. Then I will continue my other passion in real estates with the help of my hubby and my son. We will do more investing.

I had the same engineering job for 23 years, until I was laid off due to downsizing. What's interesting is that, though I had the same job, I worked for 4 different companies, as my company was repeatedly purchased by another company, who was purchased by another company, etc..

Before I had my own companies I switched jobs ever 2-3 years. I learned early on that loyalty to a company is NEVER rewarded financially. If you need to make more money you have to keep switching jobs.

I got handed a job as a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser trainee with a small auto insurance company when I was 26. The salary and benefits were amazing. It took me a few years to figure out the system but, over the years as the company grew, the salary and benefits got better and better. Plus, I learned to. really like working in the field. The company had a great corporate culture, treated me really well, and some of my coworkers were really good people.

I retired after 30 years with a pension and a lot of money in a 401(k).

I could go on and on about how great that job was.

      You tried at about 56
      Nice
      Any other investments?
      And you are in USA
Do you live on tight budget?
      Or things are plentiful?

I'm 60 and planning to work for another 5 years
But I enjoy the working life, it's tough but enjoyable
By working I'm adding to my pension
And I don't know what I'd do with myself if I wasn't working

Actually, the company got bought out by AIG who ruined it. Then they bundled all the auto insurance companies across the country that they had gobbled up and sold them off to Farmers.

I and most of the people who worked for my company quit.

After that, I tried a few other jobs but retired completely when I turned 62 and could get Social Security.

My wife and my only investment, aside from some IRAs is the house and property we bought in 2002. We have a nice house on 30 beautiful acres with an incredible view in a safe, quiet rural area.
