Should students be allowed to do homework during detention time instead of punishment essays and lines?

A couple of weeks ago i had an after school detention as a punishment for non stop messing about in class, it lasted 1 hour 30 minutes, this did not include the 5 minutes to get to the detention room, once there we had to stand behind our desks while the detention teacher checked our school uniforms, we had to have our collars done up, ties neat and tidy and blazer done up, then the teacher took the register and gave out the work, which took another 10 minutes, i had to write a punishment essay on school rules and punishments, other students also were set essays , and some had to write lines, only then did the clock start for the 1 and a half hours, i got out of school 1 hour 50 minutes late, when i got home it was time for dinner, then straight into homework, so basically i had no freetime for myself, my question is if we could do homework in detention we could still have some freetime when we get home what do you think?

Letting students do homework during detention often makes far more sense than having them write punishment essays or repetitive lines.

yes i think being kept in after school is the punishment, our detentions are on a Friday, which is the worse day to hold it, students are tired , and looking forward to the weekend, the last thing you want to do is be stuck in a classroom doing work while everyone has gone home and is having fun

When I was in school, we were encouraged to do homework during detention. Getting stuck in detention was enough to let us know we had done wrong. Having to write a punishment essay doesn't help the student understand they did wrong, it just makes them more angry about detention.

Just curious. What would have happened if you asked if you could do homework during detention?

That wouldn’t work for me after school detentions when I was younger I had football practice and the football practice had nothing to do with the schooling so they could not keep me there because I’m not gonna miss football practice because some idiot teacher wants to discipline me

From an educational perspective, detention should change behaviour and support learning, not just waste time. Letting students do homework can:

- Reinforce the idea that school time is for learning
- Reduce stress at home
- Still feel like a consequence, because you lose your free time

A balanced approach I’ve seen work: first 15–20 minutes writing a reflection on what happened and how to improve, then the rest used for homework in silence.

The purpose of detention isn't to cater to your pleasure by helping you maximize your free time. It is to make it unpleasant for you to violate school rules. Stick to the rules and you get your free time back.

When I was in school we had to either sit quiet and still during a detention or do homework or reading. In 3rd or 4th grade we had to write lines but that could be done at home we didn't have actual detentions as long as we got our 500 lines done it didn't mattrr where they were done.
