Are there any benefits to being home schooled?
- 1.9K opinions shared on Education & Career topic.
s 2 mothere are a few different reasons why some parents would home-school their kids...
for example... the schools available are just not good enough, or they're unreasonable dangerous, or... they don't really offer an option, nor provide guarantees for kids with different needs... other times, there are financial and economic reasons
now, how do kids socialize? pretty much the same as many other kids
for whatever reason, there's this perception that a home-schooled kid is an ISOLATED kid but that's not always the case, lmao
some little ones in my family were home-schooled... some kids living on my street, are home-schooled... and these kids are still, very social... they do have siblings, they do have lots of cousins... they have plenty of neighbors... and because they don't go to a school for most of the day, they can also go to sports clubs, or other activities... and that's how they socialize, simple...
now, you ask about benefits... the benefits, pros and cons always depend on ALL factors combined...
let's be honest... we would be fooling ourselves if we assume, that every kid who went to a "regular school" actually did benefit from it, we all know that THAT is definitely not the case
so, it is the same for home-schooling... do it right, and they benefit... do it wrong, and they won't benefit as much... same as regular schools20 Reply

If your parent can homeschool you well where you will get good grades you may be lucky. It prevents bullying. Even kids that aren't different can be bullied.
Two girls in elementary school killed themselves due to bullying. I don't know if home schooling goes past elementary because Rebecca Sedgewick was bullied in junior high and Phoebe Prince was bullied in high school.
Rebecca went out with Josh making a girl Guadeloupe Shaw mad. She and 14 friends were mean to Rebecca. She was told that nobody liked her and she should kill herself. She did.
Phoebe Prince was bullied because a guy named Sean Mulveyhill asked her out making his girlfriend Kayla Narey n her friends mad. Then when the relationship ended Austin asked out Phoebe making his girlfriend Flannery Mowens and her friends mad. She didn't know both had girlfriends.
She was followed in school, books were knocked out of her hand, an energy drink can/bottle was thrown at her head, they wanted to fight her, etc. She killd herself.00 Reply
2 moMe and my husband are looking into it. Public schools just don't work, look at the statistics. They are getting worse year after year. Sadly a lot of private schools just copy what the public schools do so they aren't much better.
Home schooling would give us a chance to give our kids a good education and not rolling the dice if they can read or not. Sadly some people just use home school as away to brainwash their kids into their cult. But for me and my husband it's because we actually care about our kids and want them to know how to read a clock.

I've seen lots of the reports on kids being brainwashed through home schooling that's why the idea made be so skeptical.

That can happen for sure, and it's sad. There are also tons of homeschool coop groups to help kids find friends.

2 moA lot of social pressures at school forces people into a state of emotional and sociological dependency on their peers for validation and self-acceptance, and impressionable teenagers in toxic sexually impulsive environments, are usually not equipped to handle that type of negativity and group pressure in a healthy, clear, regulated, or even safe way.
Parents with the ability to separate their children from toxic social influences, will often give them an alternative option, to socializing with their peers at school and being influenced by them.

I understand all those concerns but isn't that part of navigating life? And those experiences are indeed valuable for self-development in my opinion. I also think is best to go through those experiences as a teenager than never experiencing them and then one day when you're a full grown adult you might have to go through all that with co-workers and it can be very overwhelming as you were never exposed to those type of incidents and don't know how to deal with the situation.

I’ve worked with many homeschooling families; their reasons usually fall into a few groups:
- Academic: customize pace, go deeper into interests, avoid one‑size‑fits‑all.
- Environment: concerns about bullying, safety, or school culture.
- Values: wanting to integrate religious or philosophical beliefs.
- Flexibility: travel, sports, arts, health issues.
Socialization typically comes from co‑ops, sports teams, clubs, part‑time classes, volunteering, and neighbors. Many homeschooled kids end up with very mixed‑age, real‑world social circles.
It works best when parents are organized, patient, and intentional about both academics and social life.00 Reply

2 moMost parents who homeschool do so because of a kind of fundamental disagreement with modern education systems. However, it mostly involves a lack of religious education they agree with, so they homeschool their kids so they believe it to be as true as the mathematics in algebra.

2 moHomeschooling is typically an Evangelical Christian thing and a control freak move by people attempting to isolate their kids from a world that rejects and laughs at their extremist religious bullshit. They set their kids up as social misfits with a sub par education.
No parent or mother and father are equipped to fully educate their kids K-12 in English, math, history, social studies, physics, chemistry, biology, phys ed, foreign languages, etc. Those kids are largely fucked for life as weirdos who don't how to interact with the other 98% of society.

Unless the Parents are wealthy enough to afford a tutor for each and every school subject I don't see it working as well as going to school either. As you said is impossible that a single person is fully educated to teach accurately +10 lessons/subjects not to mention that the person who usually homeschools the kids is the mother while still taking care of a house, cooking, cleaning , laundry etc etc etc. How can you even have that much type to still teach one or more kids?
2 moDepending what district you live in and their ideology will determine what is the best course of education.
My Uncle chose to have his kids homeschooled until 8th grade. I have a cousin who is homeschooling her 4 boys. They've taken a more Montessori approach to education and it seems to being paying off. They're well behaved and excelling.
Socialization can be an issue, but they've all got friends and extracurricular activities.
Tough job for sure, especially my cousin with her 4 boys, but these kids are absolute gems at family get togethers. Kudos to her.

Anonymous(18-24)2 moThere are many different reasons. Here are a few examples:
The school isn’t doing a good job.
The child isn’t doing well with how school teaches.
The parents don’t agree with how teaching should be done.
Religious reasons.
The family is travelling a lot.
There are groups for homeschooled kids. So homeschool kids meet other jomeschool kids to socialize or go on field trips with. A lot of homeschooled kids are also in many different extra curriculars where they meet other kids. Then they may have friends in the neighbourhood, meet other kids at the playground or beach, hang out with siblings and cousins and so on. Often homeschooled kids have more friends of different ages than kids who go to regular school, because they have more opportunities to meet and socialize with different people of different ages all day whereas kids at school more just hang out with kids the exact same age and the same people every day.20 Reply
2 moHomeschooling, once nearly solely the right's ken, is increasingly being adopted by the left because in recent years, and with Trump's election, becoming much more prevalent, schools are avoiding anything but a indoctrinating "patriotic education' which glosses over or avoids slavery, Jim Crow, the horrid treatment of Hispanic, mostly Mexican farm workers, the slaughter and dispossession of America's First Peoples, the exploitation, sometines fatally, of working people and s*xual and other exploitation of women. Their children are likely to bond only with other homeschooled children, which is detrimental to society as children should be exposed to children from all walks, ethnicities and viewpoints to become well-rounded citizens.

u 2 moI volunteered with a Teen Court program and many of those kids were home schooled. Those kids were very well mannered, intelligent, and well socialized. The Teen Court program was one of the things the kids did for social interactions.
10 Reply 3.5K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. The public School system in mot of America is totally ineffective. Most graduating seniors write at a fifth grade level and in a lot of big cities nobody is proficient in math. Then there is all the drugs and violence. Who really wants their kids to socialize with a bunch of moronic, brainwashed idiots that are more concerned with social media thn preparing themselves for the future,
00 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. There are definite benefits for children who are working above grade level -- instead of wasting hours a day being bored, they can pursue their own interests.

2 moThe child May need some special treatment because of his or her special condition there is a rare disease of having a weak immune system causing someone to get sick easily and that situation can be deadly for that person or maybe his or her parents are overprotective and wealthy and want their children have their education under their supervision reasons can be varied but you have have a point socializing is öne essential thing to complete education

2 moIt can be more specialized and not just a cookie cutter pace and approach. Socialization is more difficult for sure.

u 2 moUnless the education system is completely fucked up (3rd world level), I don’t see any advantage with it. In my country homeschooling is illegal and our public schools offer a solid education.

I don't think homeschooling is allowed where I live either.
2K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. Parents may want a learning pace or style that traditional schools can’t offer. However, parents can make lousy teachers too. It does not always turn out well.

00 ReplyParents homeschool for the ability to educate their children. Whether done well or not its a choice. Socializing maybe difficult unless you can get them involved with sports church or other venues

2 moI think kids would only benefit from homeschooling if they have some sort of disorder that the school can't accommodate.
