I went to community college for a bit. I was working as a event/wedding photographer back then I was also picking up whatever work I could for film productions. Then I started directing and doing cinematography for this one show and that was around the time I met this photographer who wanted to change industries and get into video. He was 50 and his wife had breast cancer and needed to make better money before the bank took stole (yes, stole lol) house. So I'm juggling all these jobs, plus going to college, plus trying all the time to get laid.

So at that point I liked going to college but I also was only doing it because my dad wanted me to be the first of our family to get a degree. So I had to make a decision after the production company started doing well.

I started working full-time at 16 and, shortly after, did business training. Once I completed that, I worked two jobs for a couple of years.

  • I did go the traditional route: undergraduate degree, then an MBA at Harvard.

But in my career coaching work, I’ve seen people succeed through very different paths:

    - Some thrive with four-year degrees and graduate school.
    - Others build careers via community college, trades, bootcamps, or straight work experience.

The real key is clarity about your goals and a commitment to building skills, relationships, and a track record of results—regardless of the path.

Not only did I go there, I'm back there!

This line of questioning comes up often. College is an easy way to put you on a path to a solid income stream... it signals ability, teaches you what people with high incomes that went through college themselves look for when they hire, and establishes networks. Unless you're on a professional path, like a doctor, the subject knowledge is largely irrelevant in future life for 80% of garduates. It's not a guarantee, though. And there are other ways to earn as much and indeed much more.

Do whatever interests you, is my advice to my kids.

I went to college nearly a decade after high school. Mostly, it was for a girl I was seeing. She went to art school so, I wanted to be on the same level as her, so to speak, but couldn't afford the art school she went to so, I went to a Jr. college but I already had all their art classes in high school so, I decided to be a music major. That's an art! Of course, she broke up with me shortly after I started going.

@exitseven No, I never bothered, I just went to learn stuff I was interested in: music, psychology, t. v. production, electronic music, film making, bass guitar lessons, sound recording. I probably could've graduated. I went for 7 semesters but only the first 4 were full time.

Because I attended close to 15 different schools K-12, including four years of high school in three states, I decided by age 14 or so that I had no interest in going to college. That decision turned out to be one of the best I've ever made. I went on to excel in sales for forty years, and I learned how a lot of different industries work, along the way.

Finished early because of the commute issues but still passed

Was running my business before, during and after
(My during included silk ties and Pandora charms to my classmates as well as a DSLR camera for 1 and of course buying and selling gold generally)

Yup, 2 bachelors degrees and an MBA. But I did take a "different path". I didn't end up using my formal education until 15 years after University. I was practicing a completely different trade as a US Army officer during those years.

Going to a top-tier college is a license to print money. Going to a crap college is a path to debt.

@exitseven This is true. To paraphrase a boss I once had: So I studied philosophy. It turns out that labour market conditions at the time meant that positions were a little thin... so then I studied law...

Why? Best way to learn business is to sell a product or a service. Most well off people i know learned by doing it. Unless you have a mentor who does well in the field you want to go in, it is a waste of time. You are young and attractive, plenty of older men would like to mentor you. Not even anything sexual, men like the company of feminine women and teaching them things.
