I’ve seen this a lot as a manager and coach.

Often it’s not really about the “little thing”:

- Poor leadership: Insecure or untrained managers control details to feel useful.
- Fear culture: Companies think strict control prevents mistakes, so they overcorrect.
- Lack of clear outcomes: When goals aren’t clear, managers judge behavior instead of results.
- Legacy habits: “We’ve always done it this way” becomes micromanagement.

What helps: clarify expectations, show you deliver results, and, if possible, seek teams where leaders trust professionals, not police them.
