I am a hotel receptionist. I am tired of night shifts and dealing with criminal-type people.
Do you think I could become a sales representative? What kinds of challenges does the job have? What advice would you give me?
As a hotel receptionist, you have experience in customer service, which is a plus when applying for a job as a sales representative in a retail store.
It might be best to apply for a job in a retail store that you are familiar with, or one that you are familiar with its products.
Be forewarned though. Customer service in a retail store can still have its problems. Dealing with theft, customers who argue about price, customers that you help to find things and then they decide not to buy anything.
Best of luck. You deserve a job change.
Sales retail you will still be dealing with those same shitty people... maybe even on a night shift, if it's a gas station.
My guess would be going into big retail stores and checking out their working conditions. Maybe even chat to the staff about the work there, before applying.
Those are both very low-paying entry-level jobs more suited for 20 year olds just starting out. How are you supporting yourself at age 35?
You need to be a people's person and approachable.
You’re already halfway there. As a hotel receptionist you:
- Handle guests, complaints, pressure, and multitasking
- Communicate clearly and politely
- Work with systems and payments
All of this transfers very well to retail sales.
Challenges:
- Standing all day, weekend/holiday work
- Sales targets and sometimes pushy customers
- Learning product knowledge fast
Advice:
- Emphasize customer service, upselling, and conflict resolution on your CV
- Target brands you like; learn their products before interviews
- Ask for mainly day shifts
- Start in a store with stable, professional management

Retail sales? You've got to be kidding me. No experience required. Just show up and fill out an application for a minimum wage job with limited benefits.
Sales is going to have criminal like people too. People that are desperate to make sales and look good, so they use unethical practices to sell things to people who can't afford it just to make their quota.
The challenge is to make sales.
