What do you think "some college" on a profile means?

I think it means that you took a few classes and found out you couldn't hack it and quit. What do you think it means?

I never actually completed a degree, but because I tried for one of the hardest degrees, first Engineering and then Geology, I actually tested out of most of the courses people take to get their degrees.

In fact, I tested out of 90% of a General Studies degree, with the only thing I failed to test out of being Foreign Language. I have another 180 credit hours completed in total, I just didn't finish the most advanced courses in either degree program, so I didn't pass either degree program. I aced physics and passed Calculus 2 and Aced Chemistry 1 and 2 and of course aced Geology and aced several engineering specific course. Aced computer science courses that were required at the time too.

You know, I have a first cousin, Dustin Coates, who never attended a major university and dropped out of technical school after one semester, because he found he was doing the teacher's job for him. He's now a System's Engineer for a major data center having been 100% self-taught. He regularly hires and fires people with degrees from major universities.

As with many things it can be more complicated than that. In my case my father died when I was 11 years old, my mother was left working a low paying job, two kids at home and a mortgage. I started working at 14 to help out. When I graduated HS the other sibling had moved out and taken her SS death benefit from my dad with her. I worked a commission sales job part timewhile finishing HS, My dad's death benefit kicked in when I graduated so I began attending a State University while working and helping. Reagan was elected and began sawing off SS death benefits piece by piece over time crippling my ability to pull off the scheme of producing enough money to keep the house and get a degree... I was honors and advanced placement in my HS classes by the way... Life isn't always nice, or fair.

Unfortunately, lack of money is often a reason why this happens. If you lived in Europe, you'd be able to go to college for free, but of course you don't live in Europe, and so everything costs money in the United States.

lack of money at that time even though a State University was substantially cheaper, yes, but at that point simply earning enough to keep a vehicle and a house and the incidentals that come with owning things... once I started full time work I could afford school but not the time... one or the other. Mind you there are many more options for how to cut your hours up at school now. In 1980 you essentially went when the classes were offered, maybe there would be night classes available for some things... and going overseas at that time would have essentially meant abandoning mom, so... not sure what school in Europe looked like back then either, never looked like a viable option back then

Higher education isn't free everywhere in Europe, a university in the UK will charge nearly £15,000 a year for foreign students, £10,000 for locals. It even varies in Germany, depending on what county you're studying in.

Well that's good to know but it isn't free anywhere in the US. Like everything else in the US, it gets treated as a profit center for the people that own it or control it. The beauty of uncontrolled capitalism.

I just think it means that a person went to a college that's remote and that nobody knows and that doesn't make the list of the best colleges so in other words they don't feel proud enough to say exactly which one.

It can mean just what you say but for someone in the trades it can mean 3 or 4 highly intense and concentrated college courses threeq to four months long each which for electricians includes mathematics, physics, DC theory, ac single phase theory, ac three phase theory, power factor & power factor correction, blueprint reading on a complex project such as a pumping station, fire alarm systems, practical installation methods for both residential & industrial, code, both dc & Ac motors and motor controls, programmable controllers, industrial electronics both theory and practical use. Five sets of exams to pass before you qualify to write for your license exam after you put in 5000 hours as an apprentice and if you want to get your master electricians license that takes another two years of work as a journeyman and another exam to pass. That in Ontario is considered "some college".

Sometimes people have to stop attending because they are needed elsewhere. We´ve all read stories of people starting school, then leaving to support their parents or a sibling.

i had one friend brag that he was the first in his family to go to college. he failed out the first semester. he was also like 20 graduating high school. real case study

I think someone values their privacy, thinks it doesn't matter or was just too lazy to fill it in.
