Forty years ago today on September 14,1985 one of the greatest sitcoms of all time debuted on NBC.
The show featured Beatrice Arthur as Dorthy, a sarcastic quick witted substitute teacher. Rue Mclanahan as Blanche, the sultry bed hopping flirt, Betty White as Rose, the sweet dimwitted lady you'd love to befriend, and Estelle Getty as Sophia, a sharp younger feisty Sicilian who made things more interesting.
This was one of the first sitcoms to really embrace the LGBTQ community in a time where there was a moral panic with the AIDS epidemic and in the time of Ronald Reagan's Moral Majority.
But my post is to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a classic sitcom that is still in reruns and merchandise today. So, break out the cheesecake and take a trip to St. Olaf with the girls! And as always. Thank you for being a Friend.
