Is holding hands with another person considered cheating while in a relationship?

Now the answer may sound obvious to most but hear me out. I am writing a science fiction novel and there is a sub plot romance. Even though the guy has a boyfriend he falls for another guy and leaves his boyfriend for the other guy in the end. But way before they break up, the main character who has a bad actually reaches out his hand to the other guy and holds it. Keep in mind that he is still in a relationship when the hand holding happens.

Where I'm from, you only hand hands if you are children and family, or girl friends, or lovers. Older boys and men don't hold hands unless they are lovers (and they will only do it in secret, otherwise people will give you strange looks). So, unless you are a child, family, or both girls, I see holding hands as romantic.
But for some people it is just a sign of love which doesn't have to be romantic. And in some countries, older boys and men hold hands even if they are just friends.

Are you from Japan? Also I wanted to use hand holding to convey a romantic relationship since it's a young adult story. My first novel is an adult story with the main characters as gay. I like to write dark stories

Yes. I think holding hands feels innocent. So it seems to fit for a young adult story.

Well there is a scene that implies that a guy was trying to sexually assault him but it is not explicit and does not show anything

it's cheating. the person emotionally is bonding to someone else while in a relationship. if they want to bond emotionally or physically they should do it outside the confines of a committed relationship

Good thing the romance plot is not the main storyline then because that would lead to a lot of questions of morals. They are all 16 year olds, and he falls for the other guy while curing his boyfriends sickness
