What exactly is Coachella and why is it such a big deal?

I have heard of it but don't know much more than it being a music festival which people dress up for.

Coachella is mostly about the hype.

Real festival goers avoid Coachella. It has become the annual hippy dress up fashion show for mainstream Hollywood posers.

People probably want to dress up and show off that they are going to Coachella, I don’t think people are going for the music, they are going simply because it’s Coachella.

Regardless of the reasons people attend, there are more than 100 bands playing at the internationally famous music festival, and the majority of fashionable, intoxicated attendees will only know a fraction of them.

So it's ridiculous, hundreds of thousands of people go to those music festivals in Vegas. Once I was stuck in traffic on the freeway for 4 hours surrounded by people dressed as unicorns and stuff for one of those things.

Its a music festival that is insanely over priced but draws the biggest names in mainstream music, there's also a carnival on site I think and its a several day long event

It's such a big deal simply because of celebrities. There's festivals better than Coachella, but they don't get as much attention because of the lack of celebrities. Celebrities post of social media and people that follow them, people all over the world learn about the festival, unlike other better festival where celebrities don't go (mainly because of the location) so they don't receive as much attention.

It's a city in California that host one of the biggest music festivals. Unlike other music festivals that you may have heard of such as Stagecoach and Warped Tour, the Coachella music festival caters to many different genres of music. It's an all around great way to enjoy various artists, explore new music, and get to know other people.

Coachella is a music festival that's turned into a thing celebrities do and the outfits are increasingly more bizarre (some is goals though)
You're exactly right in my opinion though.
Aside from Radiohead performing, there was little in the lineup that would make me want to shell out big bucks for a ticket.
