Why have male protagonists in anime become so effeminate as time goes on?

I love old anime's from the 80s and 90s and I notice some of my favorite are because I like the characters so much and they were usually confident big guys.

Now you have male protagonists in so many animes that are like this.

I know there are some exceptions (Don't want to see any Goku shit in 2018 since he's literally been a character since the 80s). But yeah the male protagonists in most anime nowadays are these very scrawny feminine looking characters. Back in the day they were tall buff and actually looked like dudes. They used to be confident and cocky but now they're shy and socially awkward.

I don't get why there's been such a culture shift. Is this what people identify with now?

That really depends what type of stuff you're watching. They're practically kids, both of the two pictures you provided last.

If what you want is rugged features, you could surely find stuff like that. JoJo's come to mind for one. If what you want is confident and manly guys, there's a new one called Hinomaru Sumo. There's also Berserk, or Pumpkin Scissors.

Eren is like 16 there. The guy in the first picture is in high school so he's around the same age.

16 is pretty much a child though. Some may have started to grow beards but that's it. No? You must remember that most anime are catered towards young people. But there are definitely some rugged manly men in some anime, you just have to look for them.

I guess I do usually watch the more R rated animes.

The new version of Berserk may be right up your alley.

I saw the first episode and the animation was just way too jarring for me. I like the old 90s one better.

Maybe it's the clean/sharp style that doesn't suit you?

That and I just don't think CGI looks good in anime. I see this kind of CGI so much now in anime and I just think it looks terrible versus old fashioned drawing like this but old fashioned drawing that is well done seems way less common than CGI nowadays.

there's a lot of immasculation that goes around in china. there's also a large consumer base for people like that. Thats my guess anyways

Don't watch any of the other Fate shows tho, the male protagonists are pretty lame in those

I mean sure if you cherry pick then yeah every anime is like that. But plenty of anime aren't (*cough* JoJo *cough*)

Even goku isn't that buff anymore in dragon ball super. Id say the animation style has changed overall.

But also because the new designs represent reality. Anime is of Japanese origin and most Japanese are short statured and slim

It's not just in anime.

It's primarily because Asians, the target demographic, are mostly scrawny, metrosexual, dorks in real life.
