Alec Baldwin was handed a loaded weapon by an assistant director who indicated it was safe to use in the moments before the actor fatally shot a cinematographer, court records released Friday show.

The assistant director did not know the prop gun was loaded with live rounds, according to a search warrant filed in a Santa Fe court.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot in the chest on the set of a Western starring Baldwin. Director Joel Souza was wounded, he was standing behind her.

I've put thousands of "blanks" through fully functional rifles, and can tell you with absolute certainty that they are witholding a lot of information about this story, because at face value it is bullshit. Granted this could also be because reporters are idiots and will write stories a certain way just for ratings, but my point remains. The article I read uses wording that makes me think the "prop" gun is only a prop because they say it is, and could've still fired regular rounds or training projectiles (chalk or rubber rounds, which are far more likely to cause injury than blanks).

There's pretty much no case in which Alec isn't at fault for at least severe negligence, and deserves hard time for it. The Hollywood standard for safety with guns loaded with blanks is much more extreme than what is done in the military, so someone, or likely several people weren't adhering to those standards.

Wasn't baldwins fault now that the witness reports are coming out, the gun was loaded by a prop master/ set armorer which then handed the gun to the director telling them it was safe and "cold", then the director handed it to baldwin, thinking it was safe. Apparently a week before this happened that same gun went off without touching the trigger, this caused many workers to walk off the job because of safety concerns. and it even happened a day beforehand with other actors... This isn't Baldwin's fault, its the prop master/ armorers and directors fault.

I'm watching it now. The thing people are saying is how this is going to be politicized to high hell. They're saying it's likely not gong to be a criminal charge, but civilly liable, and will settle out of court. I don't think Alec Baldwin is a good or likeable person at all, but I can't imagine how he feels right now for killing someone by accident. Ironic how certain people want to talk about how deadly guns are, and then they play around with them like a f*cking toddler. Guns are ALWAYS supposed to be treated as deadly weapons, even prop guns. So yeah; this is going to get VERY ugly in politics in mudslinging, due to the nature of negligence. "After the shot was fired, the affidavit states that the armorer was given the prop gun and then removed the “spent casing” from the weapon before giving it to the police. Baldwin was wearing clothing consistent with a costume for the film (“Old Western style clothing”) but changed and also gave his clothes to the police, who said they “appeared to have blood stains,” as the Times reported.

The Albuquerque Journal, which obtained audio of the 911 call from set, reported that a woman who identified herself as a script supervisor said, “We’ve had two people accidentally shot by a prop gun; we need help immediately.”

When asked if the gun was loaded with a real bullet, the caller replied: “I don’t… I can’t tell you that… And this (expletive) AD that yelled at me at lunch – asking about revisions, this mother (expletive) – he’s supposed to check the guns, he’s responsible for what happens on the set.”

No charges have been filed in the incident, which took place on Thursday night. In a statement released on Friday, Baldwin said, in part: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.”

They were filming a movie, so say they were filming a scene, and he shoots the gun while camera crews and everyone are in front of him but away for distance safety, He fires the gun for the scene, they were likely starting rehearsal takes... so he's handed a gun that is deemed safe with blanks and is operating safely away from the crew. that's what i think happened, though I'm not certain on what they were doing or why he fired it. but i think the media took it out of context for more drama, as if he's messing around behind set. Police said the crew was filming when it happened.

The prop guy in charge made a grave, grave, mistake.
I'm sorry for this woman, the DP. (She looks so good in the second picture, by the way. Cool woman.) But I hope crews around the world, especially crop guys, now fully understand the importance of their work, and never slacking off on protocol and all safety measures. It was an honest mistake. Very, very, sad. Particularly the fact that there were already TWO earlier incidents with guns, on set, and some crew members already had quit! Wtf.

I'm also really disgusted at how many people post opinions on everything under the sun, without any effort made whatsoever finding out what actually happened. This disgusts me even more than the lack of safety conscientiousness of this incident.

it’s suspicious that at least one would have been freaking out screaming from the pain. But he continued firing the gun at another anyway. Just knowing that in my mind makes me question whether he did it on purpose or not. And thought he could hide the fact as an accident.

bare minimum this is second degree murder. The investigation will be the interesting part.

It was an accident, and both people that were shot were hospitalized, one dying later. Prop department and director are at fault for the incident in my opinion... And i highly doubt alec will be charged but we will see... There will probably be a massive payout law suit though against baldwin and film production crew.

He’ll likely be charged with second degree murder. So that they can investigate. And the charges will likely get dropped down to manslaughter. Which is the lowest convicting sentence someone can have for being responsible for someone else’s death.
